About us
CBM is committed to transforming the lives of persons with disabilities in the poorest countries in the world. CBM strives to remove the barriers that marginalise people with disabilities in the most disadvantaged societies in the world. It does this by working with partner organisations in these regions, by influencing policy at all levels and by responding to emergencies and natural disasters. Direct support - CBM targets the people affected by disability by supporting programmes - including health care, rehabilitation, education and livelihood opportunities - run by local partner organisations. Advocacy and fundraising - Simultaneously, CBM advocates for inclusion following UN guidelines in powerful, international policy-making bodies, and campaigns and raises funds through its Member Associations. Emergency response - On top of this ongoing development work, CBM has an experienced Inclusive Emergency Response team, who ensure that the needs and rights of this more-vulnerable section of society are not forgotten in times of conflict or natural disaster.

This is Meghnath’s story. Meghnath is a six-year-old boy from West Bengal, full of life and curiosity. He loves to play with his friends, help his family, and dream about the future. But for over a year, those simple joys were slipping away from him. A bad fall left Meghnath with cataracts in both eyes, and soon he struggled to see anything at all. His father, Gopinath, noticed something was terribly wrong. Meghnath was bumping into things, holding objects close to his face, and falling often. He couldn’t keep up with other children and had to stop going to school. “I don’t earn much,” Gopinath told us. “My family is just surviving, and I couldn’t afford the surgery Meghnath needed. We were all so worried.” Meghnath was at risk of losing his sight completely. Meghnath’s family had heard about CBM’s work and made the long journey to Biratnagar Eye Hospital. The doctors confirmed the diagnosis: cataracts in both eyes. without surgery, Meghnath was at risk of losing his sight completely. Just one day after his surgery, something incredible happened. As the nurse removed the bandage from his right eye, Meghnath blinked and looked up at his father’s face. — 450 million children globally suffer from treatable sight conditions. Many go blind because they cannot afford the treatment. Help us change that. #cbm #cataracts #charity #savingsight #eyehealth

With thanks to the generous support of Electric Aid, in June this year we launched our Preventing Childhood Blindness Project in Madagascar, which is a pilot project we are implementing in two districts of Vakinankaratra Region. Childhood blindness is a devastating condition, especially in regions where medical resources are limited. In Madagascar, many children are at risk of losing their sight simply because their conditions go undiagnosed and untreated. The project’s main objective is straightforward: make sure that eye diseases in newborns and young children are caught early and treated promptly. But to achieve this, the local healthcare system needs to be equipped with both the knowledge and the tools required for effective screening. One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the use of the Arclight —a low-cost, solar-powered device that combines an ophthalmoscope, loupe, and otoscope in one pocket-sized gadget. So far we have trained 98 out of a planned 150 healthcare workers—including nurses, midwives, and doctors—on how to use the Arclight and detect early signs of eye diseases. A number of those 98 healthcare workers have already trained their teams in how to use the Arclight and have started screening babies who have been brought in for vaccinations. Over the course of the project, more than 30,000 children will be screened. Watch this short video to learn more: https://lnkd.in/edpUWbTb Let's explore how we can create a custom partnership that aligns with your company’s values and objectives. Contact us at info@cbm.ie or call +353 1 873 0300 to start the conversation. Together, we can build a future where everyone is included.
