At our most recent Climate Club webinar, Sustainable Finance: Your Money, Your Influence, Ciarán Hughes CFP® from Ethico shared shocking insights on how many Irish people unknowingly invest in industries they oppose – like fossil fuels, weapons, and tobacco – through their pensions. Around 10% of Irish pension schemes, or €14-15 billion, are invested in these sectors. For every €100 in a pension, about €1 goes into fossil fuels, and €5 into other undesirable industries. 🤯 Curious to learn how to align your money with your values and avoid these negative investments? 🌍 In Dr Tara Shine's latest piece for The Currency, “How to Manage Your Climate Risk in Your Business,” she explores the urgent need for businesses to prepare for extreme weather events and the rising cost of inaction. 🌪️⚖️ 💡 “For a couple of decades now, we have had enough information to start to prepare for the impacts of climate change... Yet we still weren’t adequately prepared." From record-breaking storms like Éowyn to heatwaves, floods, and supply chain disruptions, climate risks are becoming business risks. Yet, research shows that 40% of Irish medium-sized firms have no sustainability strategy - leaving them unprepared for the inevitable. 📉 Did you know? The cost of damages from Storm Éowyn is estimated to exceed €100 million for the insurance industry, with more extreme events driving up premiums and leaving some businesses uninsurable. 🔎 Tara highlights how integrating climate risk into business planning is no longer optional—it’s essential. By running real-world scenarios, businesses can identify vulnerabilities, protect their bottom line, and plan for a more resilient future. Read Tara’s full analysis on The Currency and start preparing for the climate challenges ahead. https://lnkd.in/dfNBYQgP Dr Tara Shine Madeleine Murray Per-Fredrik Hagermark Tor McIntosh Linda Gash Kevin Henn John Haverty Sarah Buckley Alanna Curtin

“Storm Éowyn shows us just how unprepared we are overall as a society for extreme weather events.” – Dr Tara Shine 🌍⚡ Two weeks after Storm Éowyn hit, thousands are still without power, and questions are being asked about Ireland’s readiness for future extreme weather. On RTE Prime Time, Dr Tara Shine reflected on Ireland’s long-standing climate adaptation challenges: "I did an assessment of Ireland's capacity to adapt to climate change back in 2011 and then, we found that we weren't adequately prepared… We have the data, we had the data back then, but we weren't adequately planning, acting, investing or learning at that time." With Met Éireann warning that extreme weather events like this will become more frequent, what must change to ensure Ireland is ready next time?
