🌊 Licensing for Seaweed Aquaculture In a recent industry meeting led by our partner, Ann Ruddy, CEO at Alga (Seaweed) Ltd. & Redrose Developments Ltd, stakeholders came together to discuss challenges and opportunities within the seaweed aquaculture sector. The focus was on the complex licensing processes that often slow down growth and hinder progress. Recommendations that emerged from the meeting: ➡ Streamlining Licensing: The need for clear timelines, accountability, and centralized coordination was emphasized to simplify the process. ➡ Supporting Community Farming: The formation of producer organizations to offer collective support was highlighted as a way to reduce individual burdens. ➡ Developing Monitoring Tools: Participants stressed the importance of tracking ecological impacts to ensure compliance and demonstrate sustainable practices. ➡ Proving Regenerative Benefits: Using scientific data to attract policy backing and secure funding was identified as crucial for long-term growth. While the need for large-scale bio-regional ecosystem restoration remains a priority, it is encouraging to see private landowners shine a light on the art of the possible. It begs the question, could more be done by private landowners, our oversupply of golf courses or overgrazed uplands? In any case, Ireland's first rewilding or ecosystem restoration project is on a private estate owned by a heavy-metal maker and short film producer, Randall Plunkett, The Lord of Dunsany. His estate goes back many generations and includes St. Oliver Plunkett who died in 1681 and was later canonised in 1975. He was the first new Irish saint in over 700 years at the time! So like Oliver before him and now Randall - "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” (S. Jobs) Randall's project is supported by biodiversity credits in an agreement with a national coffee chain called Coffeeangel and clean tech company BIONUA. We are also delighted to say that much of the tree planting on the estate is carried out by Bob Hamilton and his nature-based enterprise, Irish Trees Limited, who are listed on the marketplace on the Connecting Nature Enterprise Platform. https://lnkd.in/ePKAsDqq
