𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗽...𝗔𝗠𝗥𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲. Can this be true? 😳 I recently listened to a prospective customer make this statement. So…I did a comparison for their fulfillment operation. A single pick and pass system? -vs- A shelf to person system? ✍️The operational criteria: - 500 orders per hour - average 2.5 lines per order - 1000 active SKUs - 30,000 cases of product on hand - average 6 unit items per case - average 30 cases per pallet (storage) - 5 shipping trailers For space considerations a high level estimate revealed …both operations needed approximately 45k sqft of total space. Traditional pick and pass conveyor operation would be around $2.8MM of capital vs around $3.35MM for a shelf to person system. ☑️Conveyor wins right? …not so fast. …operating expenses are a different story. I estimated 54 people and 9 forklifts at $3MM / yr for the conveyor system Vs 31 people with 0 forklifts at $1.6MM / yr for shelf to person 🎉So, a shelf to person system is easily the more economical approach. That and… The shelf to person system can be added in stages making life easier for brownfield applications. Scaling up the conveyor system requires costly modifications… …for more SKUs and more throughput The conveyor system can’t be easily relocated to another building. Modifications to the conveyor system require significant downtime. Shelf to person is easy to scale, move and change to fit the changing business needs. I was worried there for a minute. What do you think? ===== PS, I provide world class automation to solve real problems for distribution and fulfillment operations of all sizes. I am your “easy button”. Eiratech is delighted to be part of the National Standards Authority of Ireland's Robotics Committee, assisting in shaping the Machinery Directive regulation around new technology. 🤖 Promoting safe interaction between human and machine is a core part of Eiratech’s solution. The new regulations of 2023 add industrial security as a mandatory element for the safety of machinery as well as a number of other critical changes discussed in this article. With the EU Machinery Regulations becoming legally binding on 20th January 2027, now is the time to prepare and meet all the specifications of the new regulations within the transitional period. #robotics #automation #fulfilment #groceryretail #sortation #consolidation #egrocery #g2p #NSAI #machineryregulations
