We are an Irish patient-led registered charity with a mission to cure blindness.
About us
Fighting Blindness is a patient-led charity. Our mission is to cure blindness. We promote and facilitate the development of treatments and cures for those affected by sight loss caused by retinal degenerative diseases. Until our mission is accomplished, our counselling and support services continue to be available to people affected directly and indirectly by sight loss. We work in partnership with healthcare, science, industry and government to empower patients to achieve the greatest impact in the global fight against blindness. We are the leading Irish charity funding research into treatments for sight loss. To date, we have invested over €20 million in more than 115 research and clinical projects. We provide professional counselling and therapeutic services for individuals and families living with vision impairment and blindness. We advocate for equity of access to timely and appropriate diagnosis, healthcare, therapies and support services and, through education and information provision, we work to empower more than 296,601* children and adults in Ireland who are blind or visually impaired. Over the past 40 years, we have grown from a small support group for families affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) to a nationally recognised brand. Fighting Blindness does not endorse any of the products, medications, treatments or information reported here, or on any of our communication platforms. Articles on Fighting Blindness websites and social media are intended for informational purposes only. We strongly advise that you discuss all medications, treatments, and/or products with your doctor. *Source: “Census 2022 Profile 4 – Disability, Health and Carers” – Central Statistics Office. Imagine losing your vision, the opportunities and the faces you cherish most fading away. Today, Sir Elton John shared his struggle with vision loss due to an infection, revealing that he couldn’t even see his musical on stage. While his story is heartbreaking, vision loss is a reality faced by over 290,000 people in Ireland: https://lnkd.in/dGaRnhAh 🙏 For many, it’s more than missing a performance—it’s not being able to watch your grandchildren grow, see their first smiles, or witness life’s most precious moments. “It’s the small things I miss the most,” one of our members, Sarah, who has been diagnosed with AMD, shared. “Seeing my daughter’s face on her wedding day. Watching the sunrise. I never thought I’d lose those.” 🧡 At Fighting Blindness, we’re working every day to change this. We bring hope to those affected by sight loss through cutting-edge research, advocacy, and support services. Your support can make all the difference this #GivingTuesday. Help us fight blindness and give someone the chance to see the moments that matter most. 👉 Donate now: https://lnkd.in/epfB3T3Q Every gift brings hope. Every gift brings light. Together, we can fight blindness. #FightingBlindness #GivingTuesday #EltonJohn #VisionLoss #Donate

Congratulations to our incredible support team at Fighting Blindness! Our Art Project has been honoured with the Lifelong Learning Award from the UNESCO Learning City Initiative. For individuals living with visual impairment, engaging with art can be challenging and daunting. Fighting Blindness, in partnership with @Cork College of Further Education and Training (FET), and Cork IT, pioneered a groundbreaking sculpture course tailored specifically for those living with visual impairment. Led by the talented artist Krzysztof Rosa, this course offers a multi-sensory journey into the world of fine art. Our project stood out among more than 20 entries, with only five making the shortlist. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making this initiative a success. #FightingBlindness #UNESCOAward #LifelongLearning #InclusiveArt #VisualImpairment #CorkEducation #KrzysztofRosa #ArtForAll [Image Description: Marta, Head of Support for Fighting Blindness standing in front of the Lifelong Learning stage at the Lifelong Learning awards with leading Artist and instructor Krzysztof Rosa, and participant and artist Andrew Hull.] [Image 2: The Certificate and Award from the Live Long Learning City Initiative by UNESCO]

✨ Last week, we hosted an unforgettable Dining in the Dark event at Google HQ Dublin, as part of Google’s Global Giving Week. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Google team, over €37,000 was raised for Fighting Blindness! This will make a huge difference in funding vital research as we continue our mission to find cures for vision loss. A special shout-out and thank you to Michelin Star Chef, Jordan Bailey and the talented food team at the Google Kitchen Anthony Reilly MScACN for crafting a menu that turned our mystery mouthfuls into a sensory sensation. With 120 diners navigating the darkness, there was team bonding, laughter, the occasional fork fumble and saucy shirt, but not a morsel was left on any plate! We’re incredibly grateful to Arbour Hill Prison Service for their beautifully produced Braille menus, which added a meaningful and inclusive touch to the evening. We were also honoured to host our fantastic ambassador Paralympian Greta Streimikyte. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made the night such a success—you’re helping us create a brighter future for those affected by vision loss! 🧡 #DiningInTheDark #Event #GlobalGivingWeek #Google #GoogleTeam #VisionResearch #InclusiveDining #SensoryExperience #Paralympian #VisionLoss #Charity #FightingBlindness #Ireland
