A disused building completed in 1889 with the aim of saving lives at sea is being revamped as part of the €54-€57 million rejuvenation of Ireland’s youngest large town. Balbriggan’s RNLI Boathouse was built 125 years ago, following a number of tragedies off its coast. Finished in 1889, on the edge of Balbriggan beach, opposite a lighthouse, It sits under the town’s iconic eleven arch railway viaduct at the harbour. Both the Boathouse and Viaduct are protected structures. The RNLI Boathouse has rock faced and ashlar limestone walls, a slate roof, ornate timber panelling construction at roof level and exposed timber roof trusses. This protected structure is of great architectural, artistic and historical interest. The proposed works will conserve the building in accordance with good conservation practices. The RNLI Boathouse project is part of the €15million Balbriggan Quay Street and Harbour redevelopment project currently underway. The Quay Street and Harbour redevelopment project is the flagship element of the near €60 million Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme. The Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme is led by Fingal County Council’s Economic, Enterprise, Cultural and Tourism Department. Expressions of interest for the commercial use of Balbriggan’s RNLI Boathouse, located adjacent to the day to day access point for the beach, will be advertised in 2025. #balbriggan #OurBalbriggan #Rejuvenation #construction #building #urbanplanning #architecture Our Balbriggan Department of Rural and Community Development Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Fáilte Ireland AnnMarie Farrelly RNLI

About us
Fingal County Council was established in 1994 and is the Local Authority for the administrative county of Fingal. Fingal is located to the north of Dublin City and is also bordered by South County Dublin, Meath and Kildare, and to the east by the Irish Sea. The county covers an area of c. 448 sq. km. Fingal has a population of 296,214 (Census 2016) making it the third most populous local authority area in the country. The population increased by 77% between 1996 and 2016. The county also has the youngest population in the country. Fingal’s significant economic advantages including Dublin Airport, fast access to Dublin Port, rail, road, power and telecommunications infrastructure. Proximity to Dublin city centre and our location on the Dublin-Belfast economic corridor, ensure our continued future growth. Dublin Airport is nationally significant due to it’s employment base, passenger throughput and airfreight services and it remains the primary economic hub in Fingal. Fingal is defined by the diversity of its landscape. It is rural, urban and suburban. It is home to established communities who trace their roots back hundreds of years - these sit side by side with communities who are emerging with little past but exciting futures. Fingal has 88 km of coastline stretching from Sutton to Balbriggan. We have three protected estuaries, salt marsh habitats and thirteen major beaches. The River Liffey borders our south-western edge.

Find out about the History of Balbriggan Bath and Boathouse with previous owner, Moyra Lee. The Boathouse and Bath House at King Strand, Bath Road, Balbriggan are heritage landmarks, with significant social and architectural histories stretching back to the late 19th century. The buildings have suffered badly from the combined effects of vandalism and weather, and have been largely roofless for a number of years. They are currently in the ownership and care of Fingal County Council. The Council has identified a low impact and appropriate use for the buildings as revived boathouses for Fingal Rowing Club and Balbriggan Scouts. These works are being funded by the the Our Balbriggan Rejuvenation Programme supported by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government) and Fingal County Council’s Capital Programme. #balbriggan #history #heritage #construction #Rejuvenation Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Our Balbriggan
