Galway Chamber General Election Debate This morning, Galway Chamber hosted a lively General Election Debate at The Mick Lally Theatre (Druid), as candidates prepared for the pivotal vote on Friday, 29th November. Local businesses and community members engaged with candidates on crucial issues affecting Galway’s economy and its future. Topics Raised in Questions to the Candidates: 1. Rising Commercial Rates: Concerns were expressed about steep proposed increases in commercial rates, which will create significant challenges for small businesses. 2. Housing Crisis: Housing emerged as a major priority, with candidates agreeing that addressing the shortage and affordability issues is essential not only for residents but also for the region's ability to attract and retain workers. 3. Costs of Doing Business: Addressing the high cost of doing business was a key focus, with commitments to maintain reduced VAT rates and introduce grants to help businesses manage inflationary pressures sustainably. 4. Support for Small Businesses: Candidates emphasized the importance of small enterprises as Galway’s economic backbone. 5. Balancing Economic Priorities: Candidates highlighted the need to support both small businesses and large multinationals, which play a significant role in Galway’s economy by providing substantial local employment. 6. Balanced Regional Growth: All candidates agreed that balanced regional growth must be a top priority for the next government. This includes addressing infrastructure, housing, and economic development to ensure Galway’s sustainable expansion as a key regional hub. A big thank you to the candidates who took part in today’s debate: @Catherine Connolly (IND), Hildegarde Naughton T.D (FG), John Connolly (FF), Mairead Farrell (SF), Pádraig Lenihan (AON), Noel Thomas (II), and Seán Kyne (FG) We would also like to extend our gratitude to Keith Finnegan, who expertly moderated the debate, ensuring a thoughtful and engaging discussion. #GalwayDebate #GeneralElection2024 #HousingCrisis #BalancedRegionalGrowth #SmallBusinessSupport #GalwayChamber

Im delighted to have been appointed the Chairperson of the Galway NTE Stakeholders group. Last month Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe / Galway City Council launched its first Night-Time Economy (NTE) Action Plan 2024-2025 – The comprehensive Night-Time Economy Action Plan is designed to develop and enhance the city's offerings after 6pm, recognising the vital role a thriving night-time economy plays in the city's economic growth, cultural vibrancy, and social well-being. The plan focuses on a collaborative approach, to ensure a safe, inclusive and sustainable night-time environment for all. This pilot initiative is proudly supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media. The Action Plan provides a framework for the management and development of Galway's night-time economy, acknowledging its diverse nature which encompasses everything from cultural events and late-night hospitality to community gatherings and culture. A newly established Night-Time Economy Stakeholder Advisory Forum will oversee and ensure the successful implementation of the initiatives outlined in the plan.
