We own, operate, build and maintain the natural gas network in Ireland and connect all customers to the gas network.

About us

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.8bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.

October saw contrasting weather conditions affecting electricity generation in Ireland, demonstrating the critical flexibility of gas in Ireland’s energy system alongside the variable contributions of wind energy. The final days of October saw exceptionally high gas demand, low wind conditions required gas to take on a primary role in electricity generation. From October 29th to 31st, high gas demand and low wind conditions led gas to supply 65% of electricity needs, while wind contributed just 7%. These days ranked among the top seven highest gas demand days for October since 2011. Underscoring the critical role gas plays in maintaining Ireland’s energy security during periods of low renewable output. Read more- https://lnkd.in/eHdr8dYX #GasDemand #GasDemandGNI

At Gas Networks Ireland, we're committed to leading the energy transformation in Ireland, and today, our CEO Cathal Marley took the stage at the 2024 HydrogenIreland Conference. Speaking on the panel titled Breaking Down the Barriers: Energy Leaders Session, Cathal joined other industry experts to discuss the vital steps required to accelerate Ireland's energy transition. During the discussion, Cathal outlined to delegates that Ireland’s gas network will be ready to safely transport green hydrogen as soon as the market is ready and there is sufficient production from offshore wind. Our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network outlines our ambition to decarbonise the national gas network with renewable gases by 2045. We’re proud to be part of this transformative journey and look forward to the essential role that hydrogen and the gas network will play in achieving Ireland’s climate goals. #H2IRL2024 #MovingIrelandsEnergy
