Through shelter, we empower.
About us
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

In 1969, Beau and Emma became owners of the first home built by Koinonia Farm’s Partnership Housing Program, using the model that would become Habitat for Humanity. Their family moved into a concrete-block home with a modern kitchen, indoor bathroom and heating system, replacing the unpainted, uninsulated shack with no plumbing where they had previously lived. Pictured here, they celebrated paying off their home in 1989 with a ceremonial mortgage burning.

“We have to remind people how fundamental housing is to all of the other things they want. If you care about economic development, you have to care about housing. If you care about educational outcomes, you have to care about housing. If you care about health outcomes, you need housing.” Today in Brussels, our CEO Jonathan Reckford delivered the closing remarks at Urban Fragility and the Future of International Development, a hybrid event we co-organized with Cities Alliance. Earlier in the day he participated in a panel discussion about the connections between international development investments, social cohesion and global stability. Mathabo Makuta, the national director of Habitat for Humanity Zambia also participated in a panel exploring community-driven solutions for lasting urban change.
