🏠 The Housing Crisis in Ireland and Its Impact on the Erasmus For Young Entrepreneurs (EYE) Programme. As an Intermediary Organization for the EYE programme in Ireland, we are committed to connecting new entrepreneurs from across Europe with Irish small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), fostering innovation and growth. Beyond offering SMEs access to fresh talent, the programme creates a unique, hands-on partnership, where new entrepreneurs work closely with experienced mentors. This personal guidance helps SMEs navigate their expansion or project development, such as launching digital initiatives or forging collaborations across Europe—opportunities they might otherwise lack the connections or resources to pursue. However, Ireland's housing crisis is severely threatening this invaluable, human-centred exchange. The ongoing rising cost of accommodation and the housing shortage are making it increasingly difficult for new entrepreneurs to choose Ireland. It’s simply too expensive and out of their budget to live in Ireland. New entrepreneurs can’t afford to supplement the grant that is offered and can’t bear the brunt of the additional costs here in Ireland. SMEs who could host these New entrepreneurs make up the backbone of the Irish economy—as Michael McGrath stated in the press release accompanying the SME Credit Demand Survey 2023, "SMEs are the lifeblood of the Irish economy, accounting for 99.8% of all businesses and 69.2% of all employment in the business economy"—are losing out on valuable opportunities to access new talent and ideas that could drive their success. Though economic growth is often measured in numbers, a country is made up of people—people who work every day to make Ireland a richer and more prosperous place. Right now, we’re witnessing a time where the individuals behind our SMEs are shouldering a heavy load, both personally and professionally. If we don’t find solutions to reduce the cost of living, these individuals may soon find themselves without the vital energy needed to keep contributing and moving the country forward. That energy is invaluable. The EYE program is focused on giving SMEs access to additional resources to help them to flourish. But if that resource, i.e. the candidate who applies to exchange their knowledge and energy here on the SME’s project, can’t afford to live for up to six months in Ireland, they simply won’t come here. On the 10th of October, we will be interested to hear what the government is going to do to ensure that SMEs in our economy are fully supported. They need to take real action to enable businesses to grow. To support our SMEs, and ensure Ireland remains a destination for fresh ideas and entrepreneurship.
