Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) is the national railway system operator of Ireland. Established on 2 February 1987, it is a subsidiary of Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). It operates all internal intercity, commuter and freight railway services in the Republic of Ireland, and, jointly with Northern Ireland Railways, the Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast.

Great progress to date on our major track renewal between Connolly and Pearse, the busiest section of our rail network with up to 100,000 train movements annually. Works started on St Stephen’s Day morning and are continuing around the clock until 04:00hrs on 6th January, the quitest time of the year for commuter services. Here, Liam Hickey and Gary Donohoe detail what is entailed in the works. Our thanks to our Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail colleagues working to deliver this major project, and our contractor teams including Breffni Group, S. Duffy Plant Hire Ltd, Dixon Bros Agriculture & Plant, SAF, GPX RAIL LTD, The Global Infrastructure Group and CWS.

Rosslare Europort Update: Works are continuing at pace on construction of the new Terminal 7 infrastructure, the new permanent border control post being delivered at the port in partnership with the Office of Public Works. Foynes line update: Most of track for 42km Limerick to Foynes Freight line laid, and installation of the refurbished bridge structures complete. Tamping of new track has begun, with line ready for freight services in 2026, helping us achieve our Rail Freight 2040 Strategy targets for freight expansion.
