Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it will invest $80 Billion into data centre's in 2025. Brad Smith, Microsoft's president, said in a blog that the company was on track to invest $80 Billion to build out artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled data centres to train AI models and deploy AI and cloud-based applications around the world. Industry experts say the demand spike from AI is affecting the whole data centre sector, not just Microsoft. Looking at the bigger picture, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft have tagged close to half a trillion dollars in new data centre projects to support growth in AI and cloud computing capacity. What's our view? Chief Commercial Officer Juan Aguirre says there will be a deficit in the data centre, and the key reason for that is the availability of power. Aguirre says that the power solution will come from multiple angles, including hydropower (as with our data centre in Colombia), nuclear power, and improved processing power. However, it will also come in more efficient AI; in essence, AI will make itself more efficient and reduce the power required. Aguirre says it's too early to say what Deepseek's footprint will be, but early indicators claim it is more efficient than other AI engines. One thing we believe is a sure thing is that data sovereignty will remain a significant issue and become even more challenging in this new world order of data centres. Our data centre in the Tocancipá Free Trade Zone near Bogotá, Colombia, has received the prestigious SS 564 Green Data Centre Certification from EPI - Enterprise Products Integration Pte Ltd. SS 564 is the green data centre standard that helps organisations establish the systems and processes necessary to improve their data centres' energy efficiency. The SS 564 was initially designed to meet Singapore’s stringent green energy regulations. It is modelled after the ISO 50001 standard on energy management. This green certification means Ilkari's data centre in Colombia operates with a reduced carbon footprint and meets our customers’ power needs through renewable resources like hydropower.
