About us

The Irish Music Rights Organisation CLG (IMRO) is a national organisation that administers the performing right in copyright music in Ireland on behalf of its members (who are songwriters, composers and music publishers) and on behalf of the songwriters, composers and music publishers of the international overseas societies that are affiliated to it. A public performance of copyright music takes place when that music is used anywhere outside of the domestic environment. A not-for-profit organisation, IMRO´s function is to collect and distribute royalties arising from the public performance of copyright works. Music users such as broadcasters, venues and businesses pay for their use of copyright music by way of a blanket licence fee. IMRO collects these monies and distributes them to the songwriters, composers and music publishers who created the songs. The monies earned by copyright owners in this way are known as public performance royalties. IMRO is also prominently involved in the sponsorship and promotion of music in Ireland. Every year it sponsors a large number of song contests, music festivals, seminars, workshops, research projects and showcase performances. Indeed, IMRO is now synonymous with helping to showcase emerging talent in Ireland.

'All of the groups that GESAC represents, they're our umbrella group. They are our voice. They protect our rights, as well as collecting the royalties and paying them out to us. So, it's all about trying to make everybody here aware of us, that they speak for us.' 🙋🏻♀️✨   Singer, songwriter and Chairperson of the IMRO board Eleanor McEvoy joined Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, MEPs and over 30 renowned creators at the Meet the Authors event at the European Parliament in January.   Discussing issues severely impacting the creative sector, DJ Reinier Zonneveld said: 'There’s war going on in Europe and some people may think ‘why should we save a bunch of creatives and musicians?’ But culture is a cornerstone of society, especially in times like these. I think we should find ways to use AI to empower people to do better things than they could before, but in a way that protect human creation.' 🎨🎵   GESAC groups 32 of the largest authors’ societies in the European Union, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. They defend and promote the rights of more than 1 million creators and rights holders in the areas of music, audiovisual works, visual arts, and literary and dramatic works. 'I like the way it's a fusion of Irish bands and European bands, because I think we need to attract European bands to want to play here.' On today’s episode we are turning our attention to the Singular Artists festival, Borderline. Taking place across three rooms in the Workman’s Club in Dublin, the two day event showcases an eclectic mix of international and local acts. ✨🤟 Borderline returns to the Workman’s this weekend, Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of February and ahead of these festivities, Danny Carroll spoke to Steve Taylor (Booking Agent with ATC Live) and Dan Malone from Dublin trio YARD. Steve Taylor, is a Glasgow based booking agent with the company ATC Live, one of the largest booking agents in Europe. Steve looks after the Irish trio Adore, who are performing at Borderline this Saturday, and he spoke to us about developing artists at the early stage of their career. Before this we hear from Dan Malone, guitarist with YARD. They'll be performing on Saturday night in the Workman’s Cellar, and ahead of the show, he dropped by the IMRO office to tell us more about the band’s origins and plans for the future. Yesterday, creators and policymakers met in the European Parliament to discuss the impact of AI on music and creators. Organised by GESAC, topics covered included generative AI, exploitative buy-out contracts, transparency and fairness in the streaming market: https://lnkd.in/e9CZk4Yg 🔗 Reinier Zonneveld: “[...] Culture is a cornerstone of society, especially in times like these. I think we should find ways to use AI to empower people to do better things than they could before, but in a way that protect human creation.” Michael McNamara MEP said: “While it presents many exciting new opportunities, it cannot be allowed result in the sacrificing of creators who feed the models being developed by generative AI companies. The priority should be the creation of a sustainable and healthy licensing market.”
