The Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) and Wood Fuel Quality Assurance (WFQA) scheme had a promotional exhibition stand at the Midlands 103, Green Home and Energy Show held at the Tullamore Court Hotel Co. Offaly on Sunday February 23rd. On the day, IrBEA CEO Seán Finan and Technical Executive Noel Gavigan engaged with both business owners and householders regarding the various bioenergy decarbonisation options available for heat. The exhibition stand was visited on the day by Peter Burke T.D. Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment. IrBEA presented the Minister with a copy of the recently launched IrBEA Solid Biomass Capacity Statement and discussed with him the role of both biomass and biomethane in the decarbonisation of industrial heat. IrBEA also highlighted the need for the long-awaited Renewable Heat Obligation (RHO) scheme design to address the issue of imported fuels (biomethane and particularly Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) derived from Non-EU countries with fraud prone feedstock supply chains) which could fulfil all the compliancy requirements of the scheme and to ensure that the RHO promotes the production of Irish indigenous fuels and delivers on its objective of developing an Irish biomethane industry. This magnificently produced, fully illustrated, 284-page book, published by The Lilliput Press, Dublin, is still available from the Society of Irish Foresters for a special members price of €22.00 (Softback). This price includes P&P throughout Ireland. This work illustrates the importance of the forest ecosystem, its environmental and social benefits and also demonstrates how wood from sustainably managed forests displaces fossil-based materials in construction, energy and other products thus helping to avert the climate crisis. In it Donal Magner, the author of Stopping by Woods, explains how wood and non-wood benefits will play a major role in achieving the goals of our Climate Action Plan. It identifies forests as Ireland’s most important land use in tackling climate change and achieving net zero by 2050. Forest are also a major wealth and employment generator in rural Ireland where all downstream forest industries are based. Anyone interested in a copy please email the SIF at: info@soif.ie

Biomethane to heat the parishioner at Ballyroan Co. Laois. And biomethane is being produced just across the field from the church itself and within sight. This is local energy production which is good to see. It is likewise good to see the church embrace indigenous energy. Consider the amount of church buildings across the country a move across to renewable heating could have an impact. #energypolicy #renewables #localenergy #microgrids #heating

In a recent interview with the The Irish Times, our Director of Customer and Business Development, David Kelly highlighted the critical role of government support in advancing biomethane development. We are actively engaging with leading biomethane sector players including Bia Energy, CycleØ , Stream BioEnergy and Nephin Renewable Gas (Nephin Energy) and constructing new facilities, such as the central grid injection facility in Mitchelstown, Co Cork, to meet Ireland’s renewable gas target. David also discussed the future of hydrogen in Ireland's energy landscape, emphasising the importance of international collaboration with other Northern European transmission system operators (TSOs) through initiatives like HyNOS. By 2045, we aim to have dedicated biomethane and hydrogen grids, significantly contributing to the decarbonisation of the energy network as referenced in our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network strategy. Researchers in Italy conducted one of the longest real-field biochar experiments aimed at assessing the long-term permanence of biochar in agricultural soil. 15-year-old biochar was unearthed from a vineyard in southern Tuscany, washed with distilled water, and then tested against original samples of unused biochar. The inertinite and semi-inertinite fractions in the unearthed and washed biochar were comparable, meaning the unearthed biochar remained almost unchanged even after 15 years of active use in agricultural soil. This confirms the permanent nature of the inertinite and semi-inertinite shares of carbon in biochar. As we kick off the new year, it’s an exciting time to reflect on the growth of the Wood Fuel Quality Assurance (WFQA) scheme. We are delighted to announce that several new suppliers have joined the scheme, further strengthening our commitment to promoting high-quality, sustainable wood fuel across the island of Ireland. The Wood Fuel Quality Assurance Scheme (WFQA) is managed and administered by Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) and is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. With these additions, the WFQA now proudly represents over 100 suppliers, providing a robust network of certified, reliable sources for wood fuel. This milestone underscores the schemes vital role in promoting and supporting the use of dry, well graded, clean and sustainably sourced wood fuels, combusted in efficient domestic and commercial stoves and boilers across the island of Ireland. * Standish Sawmills Ireland, firewood supplier in Co.
