The National Heart & Stroke Charity in Ireland
About us
At the Irish Heart, we help people in Ireland live longer, healthier lives. We have a straightforward brief - we must stop people dying prematurely from heart disease and stroke. Charity Regulatory Authority No. 20008376 Every hour someone in Ireland suffers from a stroke. Every day, hundreds of Irish people are diagnosed with heart disease. The lives of these people are often cut tragically short. Many are left disabled. Up to 10,000 die each year, which makes heart disease and stroke the nation's biggest killer. It shouldn't be this way. But the good news is that some 80% of premature heart disease and stroke is preventable. At the Irish Heart Foundation, we believe we have an obligation to empower people in Ireland to make their health last longer. Our work is as crucial as ever and is not possible without corporate and public donations, on which we rely for more than 90 percent of our income. www.irishheart.ie

At age 49 Levina Reeves contracted the flu and within a matter of days she also contracted pneumonia and sepsis, and was subsequently diagnosed with a rare heart condition. Heart surgery, a six-week hospital stay and initial recovery was just the start of a long and frightening journey. After being discharged from hospital, she felt there were “no patient resources”, until she came across the Irish Heart Foundation. “I did my own research and came across the Patient Champions Programme in the Irish Heart Foundation. The shared knowledge and experience from the programme has helped me a lot."" Levina became a Patient Champion last year, because she was interested in learning more about how to advocate effectively for herself and other heart patients. “It’s very easy to be a statistic - my own voice saved my life"". The Patient Champions Programme aims to empower patients to use their voices to advocate for positive changes for heart patients and stroke survivors in Ireland. “Before getting involved with the Irish Heart Foundation, I felt isolated and burdened. I would recommend the Irish Heart Foundation’s support services absolutely, you are part of a community. You will feel empowered by like-minded individuals. It’s like finding your tribe”. " This week is Patient Champion’s week and we are highlighting amazing champions like Levina in their work to amplify the voices of heart and stroke patients all over Ireland.
