MAAS Aviation CCO, Richard Marston, spoke with Aviation Week Network about aircraft painting companies tackling environmental challenges. According to Marston, “The base coat-clear coat system saves time on more complex livery applications, with dry to tape times on the colors at around 2-3 hr., as opposed to around 8 hr. for the high solids topcoats. The clear coat also gives much better UV resistance with color retention and gloss levels lasting much longer. We are now seeing gloss levels remain over 90 gloss units for over eight years. “The improved hiding power—the amount of paint you have to apply to gain coverage of the substrate—of some base coats has also helped to reduce weight,” Marston adds. “And the pretreatments, as part of the new complete system, have improved adhesion on the rivets, helping to vastly reduce rivet rash. easyJet trials new Mankiewicz Coating Solutions paint that lowers weight and fuel burn, with MAAS Aviation painting the aircraft at its Maastricht facility. MAAS Aviation CCO, Richard Marston spoke with Aviation Week Network about the evolution in aircraft painting, with the emergence of new technologies. According to Marston, “there is a world of difference” between sustainability features in modern paint shops compared to 30 years ago. “Now, our facilities are very modern, even down to the 1,000-lux high-powered lighting. Everything is environmentally-, humidity- or temperature-controlled, so regardless of what’s going on outside—whether it’s hot or cold—it’s always stable in the hangar. "Our hangars have underground sumps, so when you’re stripping, cleaning and washing the aircraft, nothing goes out on the apron. All the waste is collected, and it’s disposed of responsibly. What we try to do is separate wet waste and dry waste. We recycle all the paper.
