Earlier in February, Atlantic Technological University (ATU) hosted the 4th INVENT FOR THE PLANET, #IFTP event in Ireland and, as usual, the Marine Institute was delighted to be involved. Overall 36+ Universities participated from 22 countries, and just under 1500 students across the globe. Ireland had students from 7 Irish Universities. The top 5 teams will get to present their idea at Texas A&M, for a €10,000 prize. Marine Institute staff assisted with organising, mentoring, sponsorship, and judging. It was inspiring to be working with the brightest of the next generation as they faced the 48-hour challenge to develop solutions to global problems, including sustainably developing the blue bio-economy. Well done and thank you to Dr Jack Saad – who was the driving force and energy behind this event at ATU. Along with all the sponsors, mentors, organisers, and students who participated. Marine knowledge is essential for the #EUOceanPact. We have been advocating on this over the past month, helping to shape the position of The SEArica Intergroup of the European Parliament, responding to the Call for Evidence by the European Commission, via the participation of our Chair Fiona Grant (Marine Institute) in the high-level roundtable starting the Fisheries & Oceans Dialogues hosted by DG MARE, and engaging in direct discussions with the Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, this afternoon.
