More amazing news! We are now the very proud owners and custodians of Ballinakelly Wood on the borders of counties Carlow and Kildare. This well known woodland is very likely an Ancient Woodland (descended from the original wild woods of Ireland) and features a veteran Yew tree, estimated to be 600 years old! This acquisition adds to our growing network of woodlands and native tree nurseries, and marks another biodiverse reserve, now set aside for nature in perpetuity.

We're really delighted with our growing network of native woodlands and nurseries, but our first ever reserve, Farnaght Wood, is still special. This is the tree canopy is where we planted our first new native woodland in an area of bare fields. Those stunning local trees grew a metre (3 feet) every year and are now home to countless birds & insects. We only plant local provenance trees, allow ample natural regeneration and we set aside this land for nature in perpetuity. For all the hard work involving kids in their ancient woodland expansion project at Ardan Wood, providing a year-round outdoor classroom for kids to explore, have fun, and learn about nature🌳

The Native Woodland Trust is one of Ireland’s leading ENGOs focused on the preservation of Ireland’s remaining ancient woodlands. It aims to protect and expand of Ireland’s existing ancient and semi-natural woodlands as well as increasing native woodland biodiversity through suitable habitat creation and sensitive management.   The Trust acquires sites across the country to protect them from harm, neglect or development. It safeguards these precious habitats from damage, removes harmful invasive species and reintroduces native trees that have been lost to the locality   It has 12 sites in Wicklow, Meath, Leitrim, Donegal, Waterford, Offaly, Roscommon, Galway and Westmeath, organises free events for the public every week & runs tree nurseries! One area of research I’m particularly interested in relates to the field of interactions between ecological and human health. This is a broad umbrella of different approaches and disciplines, and covers everything from how air quality impacts the incidence and severity of respiratory diseases, to how structuring interactions with the natural world may help in the management of complex conditions. This image is from a talk I gave last year about research on the latter. There are a lot of questions which don’t have a clear answer – all the more reason to get involved with organisations like the Native Woodland Trust, The Environmental Physiotherapy Association (EPA), and The Health and Environment Alliance, as well as any local groups active in your area. #Environment #Physiotherapy #Osteopathy #Depression #Pain #Climatechange #Biodiversity #Health
