Make a Difference This Christmas: Post Letters, Not Snacks! This festive season, the Phoenix Park is spreading Christmas magic with special green post boxes for children to send their letters to Santa. Located at: 📍 Papal Cross Car Park 📍 Phoenix Park Visitors Centre Car Park 📍 Camogie Grounds Car Park (off Chesterfield Avenue) The Phoenix Park is home to its very own herd of wild deer, and while they may remind us of Santa’s reindeer, it’s important to remember: don’t approach or feed them. Feeding the deer might seem kind, but it harms their health, disrupts their natural behaviour, and poses risks to visitors. Here’s how you can help: ✅ Post your letters to Santa at the green post boxes! ✅ Keep your distance – stay at least 50 metres away from the deer. ✅ Protect Our Park by avoiding selfies and feeding the deer. Let’s make this Christmas special for everyone – visitors, families, and wildlife alike. 📮 Spread joy by posting letters, not feeding deer. Let’s protect the Phoenix Park and its iconic wildlife this festive season. More Information: https://cutt.ly/5eZqP0Tf 📷 Naoise Culhane #PhoenixPark #SantaPostBox #ProtectOurPark #ChristmasMagic

Hedgehogs: From ‘Least Concern’ to ‘Near Threatened’ Hedgehogs are one of the most recognisable species in Ireland, known for their spiny appearance and nocturnal habits. Interestingly, their Irish name, An Gráinneog, translates to ‘little ugly one’. Despite their charm, hedgehogs are facing increasing challenges. At COP16, their conservation status on the Red List of Threatened Species was updated from Least Concern to Near Threatened, reflecting population declines across Europe. Hedgehogs require well-connected habitats to move freely in search of food, mates, and nesting sites. Their diet mainly consists of insects, such as beetles and caterpillars, along with other invertebrates like worms and slugs. During the winter, hedgehogs enter hibernation—a state of torpor where their body temperature and energy use decrease, helping them survive periods of limited food availability. However, in milder winters, they may remain active into late November or December. At OPW-managed sites, efforts are in place to protect and support hedgehog populations. Staff take special care to check for hedgehogs when maintaining habitats like long grass and hedgerows. Through the Homes for Wildlife initiative, part of the OPW Biodiversity Action Plan 2022–2026, dedicated spaces are provided for hedgehogs to nest and feed in parklands and gardens. You can contribute to hedgehog conservation by reporting sightings to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Your input helps monitor their abundance and distribution across Ireland. President Michael D. Higgins and Sabina Higgins have planted a 2,000-tree native mini forest on the Áras grounds as part of the One Hundred Million Trees Project. This initiative, in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW), aims to plant 100 million native trees across Ireland over the next decade to foster biodiversity, promote sustainability, and combat climate change. At the President’s request, the OPW commissioned a 2019 biodiversity audit of the Áras grounds, conducted by Trinity College Dublin. This audit has guided ongoing measures to protect and enhance biodiversity, demonstrating the Áras’s commitment to environmental leadership. The One Hundred Million Trees Project encourages community members, environmental enthusiasts, and volunteers to join hands in achieving this season's ambitious goal.
