What a great week for PrivacyEngine in Dubai at Expand North Star. It was an honour to meet H.E Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi Minister of State for Foreign Trade and Minister in charge of Talent Attraction and Retention at Ministry Of Economy, UAE. Likewise it was a pleasure to meet Ambassador of Ireland to UAE, Alison Milton and Ambassador of Ireland to Saudi Arabia Gerry Cunningham. We had a fascinating conversation with Hamad Hisham Al Shirawi, Director of Projects at the DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION on the future of AI and AI regulation. Central to this is the appointment of H.E Omar Sultan AlOlama as Minister of State with specific responsibility for AI. We're fascinated by the recent publication of the CEDPO - Confederation of European Data Protection Organisations AI and Data Working Group's Micro-Insights Series paper, "Is the DPO the Right Person to be the AI Officer?" A huge congratulations to our own Dr Maria Moloney of PrivacyEngine, one of the key co-authors, for her valuable contributions. It's wonderful to see Maria's expertise shaping the conversation on the evolving role of the DPO in the AI landscape. Special shoutout to her brilliant co-authors - Marc Bellon, Lionel CAPEL, and Ernst O. Wilhelm - for their collaboration in delivering such an insightful and timely paper. The document provides a comprehensive analysis of whether Data Protection Officers (DPOs) are best positioned to take on the role of AI Officer in organizations, especially as the EU AI Act comes into effect. It explores the growing responsibilities of DPOs, particularly in managing AI systems, and whether assigning them AI governance tasks could create conflicts of interest. The paper also offers practical insights for small, medium, and large organizations considering the introduction of AI-specific roles.
