Just back from an engaging EY event at the Shelbourne Hotel this morning, as always, a great experience. The discussions centred around how Ireland can drive growth and its accelerants, with insightful perspectives from a very engaging line-up of speakers. Mehreen Khan, Economics Editor for The Times, highlighted how global elections reflect a demand for change, with Ireland and Mexico standing out for retaining centrist governments. Her advice? Seize opportunities in the US – a potential golden era for financial services due to deregulation and M&A activity. Panels moderated by Sinéad Colreavy accompanied by Brian Corr and Axe Ali explored the growing role of sovereign wealth funds, increasing retail investor access, and insights from the Funds Report 2030. Fergus McNally underlined the transformative potential of improving tech, infrastructure, regulations, talent, and cross-border trade that if we can get right, will drive 30,000 new jobs to FS within just a few short years. A lively discussion with Joan Kehoe, Terri Dempsey, and Michael Cullen delved into enabling start-ups, fostering innovation, not being afraid to take risks on private ventures with public funds, and retaining talent, especially young talent. They stressed the need for bold regulatory approaches and greater focus on crypto and tokenisation to compete globally. The event closed with former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who offered advice on Ireland’s global positioning amidst European uncertainty – act fast, build relationships, and sell Ireland effectively. A lot to take away, but clear messages throughout: think big, move fast, and embrace change, and take risks! Thanks to Lisa Kealy all those at EY for another excellent event.
