Colin Judge Paralimpic Medalist standing ovation at ISME Ireland annual business lunch. Neil McDonnell , CEO of ISME Ireland opened proceedings at the ISME business lunch today. This was the rerun of the annual lunch held in November 2023 after the discovery of a WW2 bomb brought the gathering to an abrupt halt with a full evacuation. Wearing an army helmet, Neil showed the audience the fire exits and said "there are no planned fire drills today" to the amusement of the audience. Marc ODwyer , chairman of ISME and sole sponsor of Irish paralympic table tennis player, Colin Judge welcomed the Paralympic medalist to the stage. I get inspired by entrepreneurs who came up the hard way and make it happen against all odds. I rarley, if ever get inspired by sports "stars". What followed was the most inspirational talk I've ever heard from a sports person. Colin was born with no legs and 1 arm. Here's the 9 key takeaways I got from this incredibly humble, authentic, inspiring person. 1. Have parents that push you. Colins parents made him excercise the "try it muscle". 2. Gratitude is an incredible emotion and outweighs all emotions. It's hard to be angry, jealous or sad when you are grateful. 3.Forget about "why me?" 4.When you discover your passion, no matter how hard it gets, you will make it happen. 5. At the start he couldn't put a ball on the table but had a self belief that made him persevere. 6. All his life Colin was told "you can't do that or you shouldn't do this". Luckily he didn't listen. 7. Being reclassed into a tougher classification for the Paralimpics against more able bodied competitors was the most difficult thing in his life Colin explained, but how it made him a better sportsman and how he qualified for the Paralympics in that higher class, thanks to the Covid delay to get even fitter. 8. Embrace failure. 9. Look at the things we HAVE to do and see them as things we CAN do and we're lucky we are ABLE to do. Before he'd even finished there was a standing ovation and we're tight with our standing ovations in Ireland, I'm still waiting for my first one, 🥲 As we sat down I asked a few at our table "well, marks out of 10 ?" 11 was the answer and I noticed these hardy businessmen with tears of inspiration running down their cheeks, and mine. Thanks to all the ISME Ireland team for a wonderful day of learning, networking and fun. Good luck Colin Judge with qualifying for Paris 2024 and LA 2028. Give it max !
