About us
Seal Rescue Ireland (SRI) is a charity organisation that works around the clock to rescue, rehabilitate and release native seals found sick, injured or orphaned from across the coast of Ireland. As the only seal rescue centre within the Republic of Ireland, we respond to reports nationwide and aim to rehabilitate the pups back to full health so that they can be returned to the wild. SRI strives to promote ocean conservation and sustainability through proactive education, community engagement and research programmes, in order to protect our marine environment and all life within. What is a Daisy Brittle Star? 💮⭐ Because brittle stars tend to be shy, they are usually found hidden within or beneath rocks in tidepools, or burrowing in the sand and mud. They are normally nocturnal and hide in the crevices of rocks or in the sand during the day, and usually, they can be found in the lower intertidal zones up to 5000 feet deep. Out of all the species of echinoderms, brittle stars are the most active and can move easily and quickly. The arms reach out in pairs to pull the animal along the ocean floor, similar to a slithering motion, which is where they are also given the name “serpent stars”. The colour of Daisy Brittle Star (Ophiopholis aculeata) varies, being often reddish or variegated, and sometimes purplish; the central scales on the disc often form a ten-pointed star and there are often darker bands on the arms. 🎅🎄Daisy is one of 5 Christmas seals available for adoption through our website! Meet Irish Bright Eye and Firework Anemone, two of our beautiful Christmas Seals! 🎄 Irish Bright Eye is a male grey seal pup, who was rescued from South Beach, in Greystones Co. Wexford on the 28th of October 2024. He was spotted on a busy beach, with an infected eye and extremely dehydrated. He was also showing multiple skin rolls, which, which is a the sign that he was very underweight for his age which was approximately 4-6 weeks old. After a course of medication his eyes are bright once again and he is gaining those much needed kgs! A big thank you to Dan for reporting him and to our Rescue Network Volunteers Ann P, Susanna M and Kieron G for rescuing him and getting him safely to our centre! Firework Anemone is a female grey seal pup, who was rescued from Carne Beach Co. Wexford on the 24th of October 2024. She was spotted on a beach known for being a dog walking area and was extremely underweight and with several wounds on her back flippers. She was fully moulted, at approximately 4-6 weeks old and she weighed only 11.8 kg. Firework had been progressing really well and is already making friends, competing for fish with other pups and sharpening her hunting skills! A big thank you to her finder Marie H and to Kate M on our Rescue Network for transporting her safely to our centre! If you would like to support either of these sweet pups and follow along with their journey, you can adopt them here: https://lnkd.in/dqTNq-X #marineconservation #sealrescue #marinemammals #christmas
