This morning’s Annual VTN Operators Conference 2024 at the stunning Killashee Hotel saw an impressive turnout and an agenda packed with valuable updates and insights. Jim Power of Jim Power Economics delivered a thought-provoking economic outlook for 2025, followed by Tony O’Brien from Elite Risk, who shared critical insights on cyber security. Matthew Austin of Hayes Solicitors concluded the presentations with an engaging talk on the legal considerations surrounding emerging AI technologies. The Road Safety Authority (RSA) provided several updates to the network. Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has announced the introduction of green ‘flash’ registration plates for zero emission vehicles. The green flash plates will identify a vehicle as zero emission, giving them unique visibility and promoting the green transition on our roads. The new registration plates will be introduced next year, from 1st July 2025. This will allow the necessary legislative and technological amendments to be made. All categories of vehicles such as cars, motorbikes, vans, buses and trucks which are zero emission at the tailpipe will be permitted to carry the new green ‘flash’. The green ‘flash’ plates will not be mandatory. It will be at the discretion of dealerships and consumers whether to apply the new registration plate. For zero emission vehicles already on the roads, drivers will be able to ‘opt in’ and retrofit their vehicle with the new plate.

Today @ SIMI - Society of the Irish Motor Industry we released the official 242 October new vehicle registrations statistics. The data shows new car registrations increased 9.7%. when compared to October 2023 (2,208). However, year to date new car registrations have experienced a slight dip of 1.2% (119,668) in contrast to the same period last year (121,134). October marked the ninth consecutive month of decline in electric vehicle registrations. New EVs registrations are 12.3% lower than October 2023, while year to date seen a 25.4% decreased in EV registrations, highlighting a challenging trend in the EV market. SIMI - Society of the Irish Motor Industry have released the official 242 September new vehicle registrations statistics which show another month of declining new car registrations 10.3%. Notably, new EV registrations in September experienced a 30.8% decrease compared to the same month last year. It is crucial that we see positive measures from Government in today's Budget to support the EV project and help reverse this drop in demand for EVs.
