Some of the pupils at Bray School Projects in Wicklow learning about Solar Panels after their new PV Solar system was installed as part of the Schools Photovoltaic Programme we have been working on this year. 🌞 In 2023 The Minister for Education Norma Foley TD and the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan TD have announced the first phase of the Schools Photovoltaic Programme, which included over 1,600 schools. The scheme funds up to 6 kilowatts of roof-mounted solar PV for all eligible schools. This also includes connection to the grid and a monitoring and display screen. 🌞 Ireland has climbed to 5th in the EY Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index! This remarkable achievement highlights Ireland's growing appeal for renewable energy investments and the significant strides we are making in the sector. 🔋 Key Insights from EY: 🔸 Ireland ranks as the 5th most attractive country to invest in renewable energy projects on a GDP-normalised basis. 🔸 Network gridlock and high capital costs remain consistent challenges. 🔸 Ireland climbed to 16th in the CPPA Index, reflecting the growing use of 🔸 Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPA) where businesses commit to purchasing electricity directly from renewable sources. 🔸 Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are critical to balancing renewable energy development and smoothing supply and demand peaks. During 2023, an additional 0.6GW of new grid-scale renewable energy was installed across Ireland, including 0.2GW of wind and 0.4GW of solar. This tripling of capacity underscores Ireland's ambitious energy transition plans and the impact of progressive decarbonisation policies. However, challenges such as network gridlock and high capital costs need to be addressed to meet the COP28 target of tripling renewable capacity by 2030. EirGrid Group's Shaping Our Energy Future investment strategy aims to make the grid ready to carry 80% of Ireland’s electricity from renewable sources, a vital step towards a lower-carbon future. Battery energy storage systems are also key. Ireland's recent Electricity Storage Policy Framework supports the integration of renewable energy by clarifying the critical role of electricity storage in our energy system. With over 1GW of electricity storage connected to the grid and projections of 4.45GW by 2030, Ireland is well-positioned to enhance grid stability and accommodate more renewable energy. 📊 According to our Scale of Solar report (https://lnkd.in/dK9t8zu6), solar energy in Ireland is experiencing incredible growth: 🔸 Domestic Solar: Up by 58%, reflecting a significant rise in household solar installations. 🔸 Commercial & Industrial Solar: Grew by 35%, showing robust uptake in business sectors. 🔸 Utility-Scale Solar: Expanded by 50%, underscoring major investments in large-scale solar farms. Additionally, ESB's recent announcement of 100,000 microgenerators connected to the grid is a huge milestone, demonstrating the enthusiastic adoption of solar power at the grassroots level. The ISEA is committed to supporting these efforts and driving the solar energy agenda forward in line with the Government's Climate Action Plan. However, unlocking network challenges is essential to prevent renewable generation from facing curtailment.
