A huge thank you to Diageo Ireland and their Off-Trade Team for organising an impressive bake sale last week, raising €455 for The Liberties Community Project. The funds will directly support our Bee8 social enterprise helping to manage community hives and deliver beekeeping classes focused on sustainability and biodiversity. Without core funding, Bee8 relies on philanthropy and partnerships like this to keep buzzing. The Liberties Community Project is delighted to be partnering with Diageo to nurture a vibrant and inclusive community filled with creativity and opportunity in the Liberties.

We are delighted to have finally publicly launched The Liberties Community Project- the voluntary legal amalgamation of Robert Emmet CDP & SICCDA last Thursday, 7th November, in the beautiful St. Catherine’s Church on Thomas Street, Dublin 8. The merger process had taken four years since conception and it was a joy to celebrate it’s culmination with founding members of both organisations, local community members, colleague organisations, funders and supporters. Many thanks to everyone who was in a position to join us on the evening and reflect on the history of both organisations, local needs and opportunities and tactics and strategies for achieving better outcomes for the area. Well done to our Chairperson Denis Murphy DProf and our CEO Austin Campbell who gave an overview of what we do and the reasons why we do it. Particular thanks and well done to Brenda O' Neill and Wafaa Abusharekh for inputting on the vital role that community development organisations play safeguarding rights as well as providing personal insights on their engagement with both historic organisations, SICCDA & Robert Emmet CDP. Thanks also to the performers who entertained us and showcased the richness of local talent in The Liberties- Robyn Duffy & Sean Burch, Debbie Collins Byrne and Victoria Zhadko & Ana Kardakova. Finally many thanks to Michael McDermott for organising a wonderful event, to Margaret Dorgan for MC'ing and to St. Catherines Church Thomas Street (Andrew McNeile, Eoghan Heaslip) for sharing their beautiful venue. The Liberties Community Project believe that partnerships and collaboration are essential to achieving our mission and we actively seek to build on the energy of this event and continue to work with other organisations, government agencies and community groups to create positive change in The Liberties. Please contact info@thelibertiescommunityproject.ie to get involved in pursuing our vision to create a resilient and vibrant community in the heart of Dublin.

Happy to share our new five year strategy document! Every effort has been made to develop a strategy that is ambitious, achievable and directly reflective of what the Liberties community feel is required for the area to progress during the years 2024 - 2028. To this end two separate questionnaires were developed and distributed to community members and partner organisations posing a series of questions designed to understand sentiment about local need and opportunity. The answers from 98 responses were collated into a series of documents which along with available statistics, policy and academic papers informed two joint organisation meetings facilitated by Caroline McCamley in 2023. The output of these sessions were shared and pre-approved by Robert Emmet CDP & SICCDA boards before being formally adopted by the board of The Liberties Community Project at the organisations first AGM in October 2024. The Liberties Community Project believe that partnerships and collaboration are essential to achieving our mission and we actively seek to work with other organisations, government agencies and community groups to create positive change- please contact info@thelibertiescommunityproject.ie to get involved in pursuing our vision to create a resilient and vibrant community in the heart of Dublin.

This time last week, we were at the serene grounds of Bloomfield House Hotel, Leisure Club & Spa in Mullingar for a convening of grantees, partners, and experts to discuss about 'Climate Goals & Community Roles'. As a philanthropic hub with a thematic focus on #SustainableFutures, we are eager to shape political priorities on climate and nature as well as ensure community is involved even as we continue our mission of #EqualityForAll. Many thanks to Third Space Café (Sean Mullan, Chloe Snell & co!) for dedicating their October 'Square Meal' to The Liberties Community Project. Every month Third Space Café nominate a different local charity to be beneficiary of their 'Square Meal' initiative - Third Space staff kindy volunteer their time, Third Space covers all food and overhead costs, attendees pay what they think the meal is worth at the end of the night and all money raised is donated to that months beneficiary charity. € 1,375 was raised for the Liberties Community Project in October- this money will be used to deliver front line services in The Liberties area of Dublin 8. Many thanks to the Square Meal for hosting this year (and consistent support of Robert Emmet CDP since time immimorial) and many thanks to our supporters for their ongoing contribution and particiaption. The Liberties Community Project is the legal voluntary amalgamation of Robert Emmet CDP & South Inner City Community Development Association (SICCDA) and will formally launch on November 7th 2024. Letter from The Liberties Community Project CEO Austin Campbell in today's The Irish Times. Simple solutions to complex issues don't exist and confidently offering the same to large audiences through a trusted publication dangerously influences political action. This influence is evident when reviewing Dublin City Council Allocation by Electoral Division 2022 -2026 Capital Budget for Sports and Leisure, Parks and Open Spaces, Libraries and Galleries which show €137,326,629 or 46.25% of total budget spent in the North Inner City compared to €1,630,000 or 0.55% of total budget spent in the South West Inner City. These are the key budget areas which can be considered to enhance the likelihood of a community being happy and well- not additional policing or population- and a differential in spend of c.8,500% between different electoral areas indicates a politicisation of decision making processes that does not bode well for a thriving inner city. Darragh Moriarty Michael Pidgeon maire devine Dr. Jen Cummins Ammar Ali aengus o snodaigh Brid Smith Patrick Costello @Joan Collins Senator Catherine Ardagh
Describing 'central Dublin' as empty of people and reducing 'central Dublin' to one specific element of it- the North Inner City- is both inaccurate and dangerous. What inner city Dublin needs most is an equitable allocation of resources and appropriate policy- not additional gardai and /or additional population. Many thanks to the The Irish Times for publishing my response today to David McWilliams "Dublin's O' Connell Street has just one resident left. What the area lacks most is not gardai, it is people", Opinion, October 19th.
