  • Introducing the 'SpeedCurtain' ME Project: UCD student Ciarán Cullen has created a frame of lights that can “paint” text into a long exposure photograph. He built this new device as his dissertation project for the ME Electronic & Computer Engineering. When the ‘SpeedCurtain’ display is pushed forwards, the text on it scrolls backwards, at the precise opposite speed to cancel the display’s motion. This creates the illusion that the text is held stationary in space. Like running down an up escalator! Ciarán began work on this prototype in September 2023, working with Dr. Paul Cuffe in the UCD School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. The dissertation project (EEEN40240) is a capstone to the prestigious ME programme, and represents 25 of the 60 credits earned by students in their final year. UCD College of Engineering & Architecture Using his expertise in software engineering and electronics design, Ciarán could drive a large curtain of LED lights (2m × 2m) from a small specialized computer (an Arduino microcontroller) coupled with a satellite navigation receiver (to continuously monitor the device's speed of motion). By writing custom C++ code, and undertaking many rounds of testing, by April this prototype could create patterns of illumination that seemed to hang in the air. This is the ‘SpeedCurtain’ device: it can paint exciting, colourful text messages using light, and is especially useful for creating striking long exposure photographs.
