Team VEON Ltd sponsored a table at the National Maritime Dinner in support of the Atlantic Youth Trust CLG. The Atlantic Youth Trust is an Irish registered charity, which exists to build life skills, resilience, and co-operation in youths across the island of Ireland through the challenge of the sea. It was such a great event, and we were very happy to support such a worthy charity which has had such a positive impact on the lives of many young people. Congratulations to Eddie Buckley, VEON Ltd Regional Manager, who was presented with his winning award in the Water Day category of the National Heritage Awards which was sponsored the Local Authority Waters Programme (LAWPRO). VEON Ltd’s sponsorship of the second year of the “Folly Tales and Treasure Trails” Heritage Week event was deemed to be a great success by all the participants. Eddie explained “this year, for the younger attendees, we had a foraging walk along the bank of the river Brosna where all of the edible plants were identified and sampled. This was followed by a demonstration of kick sampling in the river”. This natural learning experience was enhanced by the use of the Explorers Kits given to each child which were donated by Veon. I attended the UK Forest Market Report Conference in London yesterday. The UK is the largest export for Irish timber so it is very important that we understand the current market trends in the UK. Very interesting discussions on the UK property market which appears to be down in 2024 though the data size is small. However, this is the second year of an essentially flat market. Factors influencing price for similar forests are location, infrastructure, the amount of Sitka spruce, etc. Interesting discussions on future of species diversification due to climate change. Public and private growers have very different views on the future in this regard. Public sector encouraging more diversification for climate adaptation and disease risk. Private sector favouring Sitka spruce as it’s the most profitable tree for investors with ready made markets and is hugely important for our construction sector, especially housing.

The need to restore nature, and our relationship with it, has never been more urgent. VEON Ltd ecologists use mammal camera traps to safely observe small mammals. These traps allow our ecologists to study the behaviour, population, health, distribution, and ecological roles of small mammals, such as field mice and shrews, in their natural habitats. The health of an ecosystem can be evaluated through assessing the variety of mammal species in an area and estimate population sizes, densities, and trends over time. The camera traps are used to study movement patterns, habitat preferences, and other ecological behavioural interactions of mammals. It was a stunning, misty November morning to be out in the forest on Tuesday. A lot of domestic timber headed to the mill and then, ultimately, to the construction sector and into someone's new home. This forest will be replanted in the coming months and so a new forest will develop, more carbon sequestered and a future timber supply assured. #sustainable #forest #timber #construction #forestry
