About us

Established in 1761, Wilson’s Hospital School is, to this day, a place where true love of knowledge makes all study a discovery and joy. Our school maintains a distinctive Church of Ireland ethos, fostering Christian practice and teaching, promoting dignity and respect for the individual and committed to the provision of a caring family atmosphere in which education can flourish. Wilson’s is an inclusive, co-educational day and boarding school and serves the needs of all who come to be educated here. Our school promotes distributed school leadership, planning, curriculum and assessment reform, restorative practice, learner empowerment, student-voice, and the building of communities of practice. With inclusion and diversity at the heart of what we do, Wilson’s Hospital School works in partnership with students, teachers, parents and the wider community to co-create a school culture based on the principles of: *Compassion *Personal responsibility *Ambition Our committed teaching and ancillary staff espouse Andrew Wilson’s vision of loyalty and devotion to those they serve. As a school community, we are bound to speak through our deeds more than our words – Res Non Verba – and it is our mission to send those who graduate from our school to join the many thousands of other Old Wilsonians around the world with the ideal and power of service given to us in Christ, as expressed in a school with a vibrant and progressive outlook.

Anyone watching Junk Koture on RTE Player the other night couldn't but be impressed by the creativity of our transition year students. As an NED of Bord Iascaigh Mhara - Ireland's Seafood Development Agency I LOVED this dress made of 2000 mussel shells by Clodagh Ramsey from, Wilson's Hospital School. Entitled 'Aquaculture' if aims to highlight the battle our world faces to feed more than 9 billion people and finding sustainable alternatives to how we farm and source our food. Thanks to Dr. Don O'Neill for bringing it to my attention.

🌎Climate Action & Sustainable Development🌎 Learning is not value-neutral. I am very excited about the prospect of students engaging with Climate Action and Sustainable Development from 2025 onwards. This builds on the Climate Action Short Course at Junior Cycle, and schools' individual and collective efforts to provide learning opportunities for students in the areas of sustainability, development education, climate, the just transition, and global citizenship. Kudos, NCCAie #edchatie #climate #sustainaibility #Ireland #education Specification: https://lnkd.in/d29xrCsn

  • 🟦AWARDS NIGHT 2024🟨 NOTABLE OLD WILSONIAN Celebrated at our annual Awards Night on 16 May was notable Old Wilsonian Lt. Cmdr. Stella Isaac (WHS ’97) who recorded the video message below. The video was shown to all classes during Tutorial time this morning. Lt. Cmdr. Isaac serves with the Royal Navy and having completed a posting on board the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, is now working at the UK Cabinet Office with the task of delivering an assessment of people needs for the Royal Navy. Wilsonians are global and influential! Currently a PhD student at the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge, Stella is fascinated by the educational experience of Irish Protestants living in the Republic of Ireland. Using an autoethnographic and oral historical approach, her PhD research seeks to explore the experience of Protestant children who were educated at Wilson’s Hospital over the period 1922-2022, with emphasis on her own experiences and how she has come to reconcile the dilemmas and conflict experienced in her own life. The study also explores what it meant to be educated as a Protestant and Irish person in a century that saw Ireland transform from being a colony of the British Empire to its status as being one of the top economic performers in the world with a whole new multiethnic and Irish demographic that is more diverse than its forebearers could ever have imagined. 🟦VIDEO🟨 https://lnkd.in/ebSWt2dm #Leadership Mark Mellett Sean Clancy Liam Wegimont

  • 🟦AWARDS NIGHT 2024🟨 Wilson’s held its annual Awards Night on Thursday, 16 May. Guest of Honour was Castlebar native Dr. Mark Mellett DSM, former Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces. Dr. Mellett spoke to the need for courageous, principled leadership anchored around: 1. Seizing opportunities but acting honourably. 2. Having a quiet ego. 3. Tending to your physical and mental wellbeing. 4. Validating those around you and acting as their champion. 5. Facing your fears. 6. Knowing your purpose – being yourself, having a creative and open growth mindset. 7. Being courageous in everything you put your mind to – populism is not leadership. Principal, Frank Milling, spoke about the pressing need for our school to vision and believe ourselves to be a more ambitious, agile and efficient organisation. He stressed that Wilson’s must have a clear, and clearly espoused, sense of who we are, what we do, and why we are special. We are proud of that difference, and unafraid to say so. More people are discovering Wilson’s, he said. They are excited by our vision and want to be a part of it, as evidenced by the fact that at 486 students, the school’s enrolment is now the highest it has ever been in its 263 year history thanks to a 10% year on year increase. #WeAreWilsons #Education #Ireland #Castlebar #Leadership Sean Clancy Rachel O Connor Shay Bannon Anne Looney Joe O'Hara Clive Byrne Liam Wegimont Philip O'Sullivan Doug Beattie MC MLA Irish Defence Forces
