Today, the ESRI and European Migration Network (EMN) Ireland have published the 'Annual report on migration and asylum 2023'.   🔎 The report features an overview of the latest migration data, policy and operational developments, research, and case law from 2023.    👥 Challenges include continued forced migration flows, limited processing and accommodation capacity for international protection, continued labour market shortages and the expansion of sectors eligible for employment permits.    📈 Immigration increased by 5% in the year to April 2024, still slightly lower than the peak in 2007.   🪪 There has been a 24% increase in all valid residence permits (which are issued to non-EEA citizens, excluding beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine) in 2023. 30% of these are for employment, 21% for education, 19% for family, 27% for other reasons, and 3% for international protection. It's great to see European Migration Network work led by European Migration Network (EMN) Ireland highlighted by Sorcha Pollak in The Irish Times today. Ireland is experiencing immigration and challenges related to immigration later than a lot of other European countries, and there is a huge amount that we can learn from their experiences. One of those is the importance of contingency planning and good practices relating to how to plan for sudden increases, and how to communicate those plans. 🤔 How do European countries manage family reunification for recognised refugees? 👩🏫 Our latest EMN Ireland Migration Memo is here to help answer this question! In this latest edition of the series, we draw from the EMN Inform on Family Reunification for beneficiaries of international protection to shed light on eligibility, application processes, application timelines, and accepted types of documentation for proving family links. Key takeaways: 🔹 EMN countries have varying criteria for eligible family members for reunification. Many allow long-term or cohabiting partners, dependent adult children, and in some circumstances, dependent parents. 🔹 Almost all responding countries have defined time limits to issue decisions on applications, in line with the 9-month time limit under the Family Reunification Directive. Ireland (having not opted into the Directive) is one of only two countries with no defined time limit. 🔹 Proof of pre-existing family ties is verified across EMN countries by using official documentation, or alternatives including photos and letters. 👇 Read the memo below, or click to find it on our website. https://lnkd.in/eFevePiD
