First, a disclaimer. This post is about highly sensitive issues, and my knowledge of the case is based on media reports alone. Hence, whatever I say about the specifics of the case is pure speculation. I do not intend to comment on the particular case, only to use it to initiate a discussion on broader issues. Furthermore, everything I say here is my private opinion, and does not represent any institution I may be affiliated with. You've probably heard of the tragic story of Sewell Setzer III. If you haven't look it up. It's all over the media. My understanding is that Sewell committed suicide after establishing an intense relationship with a character.ai bot simulating Daenerys Targaryen. In recent months, Sewell had become withdrawn, fell back in his school work and left the basketball team he loved. At the same time, he apparently developed an addictive relationship with the Daenerys bot, engaging in long and intimate conversations, allegedly with romantic nature, some with sexual content. Sewell discussed his emotional state with the bot. The bot asked him about suicidal intentions. He acknowledged and the bot responded. I won't get into the question of causality. I have no way of knowing if Sewell's depression caused him to intensify his relationship with the bot, or if his dependency on the bot intensified his suicidal thoughts. I can't say if the bot tried to deter him from committing suicide or encouraged him to proceed. I want to discuss opportunity, risk and responsibility. GenAI is extremely powerful technology. In fact, it is so powerful - I'm not sure we can call it technology. Just like we don't call humans we engage with "technology". It has immense positive potential, but like anything powerful - it carries risks. The US office of EdTech just published a "A Toolkit for Safe, Ethical, and Equitable AI Integration" https://lnkd.in/dmjPuK2w (thanks, Pat Yongpradit, and well done Jeremy Roschelle and team). It discusses the known risks of AI at length - bias, hallucinations, privacy, increased inequality, and others. But how do we assess the social, emotional and mental health risks? The thing is, this pattern of behaviour is not new. We've seen it with social media, video games, and what have you. We've also seen the corresponding waves of moral panic, and one will surely follow this incident (danah boyd wrote some great stuff on moral panic). I think this is different. The main difference is that there is reason to suspect that the bot identified Sewell's distress. Now, if a human interacting regularly with Sewell would be in that position - a teacher, sports coach, club guide - they would be obliged to report to the health authorities and his parents. Should charecter.ai be expected to do the same? Also, think AI (or post-digital) competence. There's a dimension to our interaction with this tech that exceeds anything we've known, and it's our responsibility as educators to prepare young people.
