Good news for residents of Northern Israel Planning a Pregnancy: State-Funded - Expanded Genetic Screening Tests Now Available Dr. Tova Hershkovitz Director of the Genetic Institute at Galilee Medical Center: "Thanks to modern technological equipment, we have been able to identify mutations causing rare and unique genetic diseases prevalent in the northern region. This vital screening is now part of the state-funded health basket. On November 15, a groundbreaking initiative by the Ministry of Health took effect, offering couples planning to conceive access to an expanded range of genetic screening tests, funded by the state. This program allows the detection of carriers for hundreds of hereditary diseases, including several mutations identified by the Genetic Institute at Galilee Medical Center as having a higher prevalence in northern Israel. Dr. Tova Hershkovitz, an expert in medical genetics and Director of the Genetic Institute, emphasized the significance of this advancement: "The fear of a child being born with a genetic disease is universal. Until now, the publicly funded genetic screening tests covered only a limited range of diseases based on parental origin. Additional tests were available but only through private funding. This reform is transformative, enabling us to identify a broad spectrum of genetic risks in healthy parents who might otherwise unknowingly pass on these conditions." Dr. Hershkovitz further highlighted the unique contribution of the Genetic Institute: "With modern technological equipment, we've identified several rare genetic mutations specific to our region. These include conditions like Cockayne syndrome, a rare DNA repair disorder that appears immediately at birth or in the second year of life, characterized by developmental delays, sensitivity to sunlight, premature aging, deafness and vision loss, and Cerebrotendinous  Xanthomatosis (syndrome CTX), a rare autosomal recessive, metabolic storage disorder that affects various tissues and the brain." Couples planning a pregnancy can access these state-funded genetic screening tests without needing prior health insurance fund authorization. Warm congratulations to Prof. Maya Wolf, Director of the Maternal and Fetal Medicine Unit and Clinics in the Raya Strauss Wing of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Galilee Medical Center, on her well-deserved appointment to professorship! Prof. Wolf, also Head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine in Safed, plays a pivotal role in educating future generations of doctors. She lectures and coordinates courses for medical students in both the six-year and four-year tracks. In addition to her academic contributions, Prof. Wolf serves as Chairperson of the Northern Branch of the Israeli Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology and was recently elected to the board of the Society for Maternal and Fetal Medicine during its annual conference. Prof. Wolf's research focuses on complications during pregnancy and childbirth, including infections, premature rupture of membranes, preterm births, gestational diabetes, toxicosis, and placenta accreta. Her studies have directly contributed to advancing and refining treatment protocols, positioning the Galilee Medical Center as a leader in Israel for maternal and fetal care. In recent years, numerous studies led by Prof. Wolf and her team have been published in leading obstetrics and gynecology journals. Some of these works have also been presented at prestigious international conferences, including the Annual Convention of the American Society for Maternal and Fetal Medicine, earning significant recognition for the Gynecology and Obstetrics Division, the Galilee Medical Center, and the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine at Bar-Ilan University. We were honored to welcome members of the Jewish Agency for Israel's Board of Governors on a solidarity visit to Galilee Medical Center through the Partnership2Gether Western Galilee Program (P2G W. Galilee) of the Jewish Agency for Israel. The delegation included Lori Klinghoffer, Chair of the United Israel Appeal (UIA), along with Diana Anderson, Harry Levy Co-chair of P2G W. Galilee, and Sharon Brodkey, Executive Director of the Community Relations Council (CRC) of the Jewish Federation of Omaha, who came to show their unwavering support for our medical center during the Swords of Iron War. The visit began with opening remarks and a detailed presentation by our General Director, Prof. Masad Barhoum, in the underground command headquarters. Prof. Barhoum highlighted the medical center's activities since the start of the war and the unique challenges we face as a frontline hospital, located just six miles from Israel’s border with Lebanon. The briefing was attended by key members of our leadership team, including Dr. Khetam Hussein, Deputy Director, moshe meyouhass, Administrative Director, Dalya Tedgi, Nursing Director and Ayala Shaul Erez, CEO, of our Friend's Organization. Our guests toured the underground hospitalization complex and Emergency Department, including the second trauma room, which was established with the generous support of the Jewish Federation of San Antonio and the Bar Yadin Family Foundation to address critical needs arising from the war. The visit, coordinated by the International Affairs Department led by Aya Kagade, underscores the deep and enduring connection between the Jewish communities in the USA, as well as from Budapest, Hungary, and the Western Galilee. Through the Jewish Agency’s Partnership2gether program, these bonds continue to strengthen, fostering collaboration on special projects while deepening ties between the Jewish Diaspora and Israel. 🏆 **Excited to Share My Recent Achievement!** I am thrilled to announce that I won the competition for the **Best Research** award at the Israeli Maternal-Fetal Medicine Committee! My study focused on a critical area of women's health, comparing breast stimulation versus IV oxytocin for the induction of labor in women with a history of cesarean sections. 🔍 **Key Findings from the Study**: - **Induction Time**: The results demonstrated that the induction time until delivery was significantly shorter in the oxytocin group. - **Contraction Measurements**: Interestingly, contractions, as measured by Montevideo units, were similar between the two groups. - **Tachysystole Rates**: The breast stimulation group experienced lower rates of tachysystole compared to those induced with IV oxytocin. - **Delivery Within 24 Hours**: A high percentage of deliveries occurred within 24 hours across both groups. - **Cesarean Delivery Rates**: Rates of cesarean deliveries were comparable between the two methods. - **Complications**: Importantly, occurrences of uterine rupture and other complications were similar, highlighting the safety of both induction methods. This research could contribute to more informed clinical practices and improved outcomes for expectant mothers. Dr. Khoury was recognized for his exceptional contributions, including during the recent conflict, where he managed complex imaging cases for hundreds of war victims, demonstrating remarkable expertise and dedication.
