Growing animal-based proteins, in potatoes.

עלינו

PoLoPo is developing a plant bio-factory for high scale, custom-made production of proteins. Our first candidate is egg protein (ovalbumin) in an edible plant. Using directed metabolic engineering techniques, while exploiting the full potential of plants as diverse metabolite and green protein factories, we create a “superAA” plant. The superAA is able to produce considerable high amounts of free amino-acids. The elevated production of amino-acids is then translated into high scale production of proteins in plant organs. On the second phase we use superAA plants as the basic plants for the creation of a new set of plants, expressing and accumulating the target protein (such as egg protein) in plant sink organs

Big thanks to Elaine Watson and AgFunder News for peeling back the layers of what we do at PoLoPo! This great interview with Maya, our CEO, dives into how we’re producing high-value proteins like ovalbumin with potatoes! Who knew your favorite side dish could help tackle global food challenges? It turns out that potatoes aren’t just good for fries - they’re also excellent for the future. Check out the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gtPsi27A

We are hitting the ground - literally. PoLoPo has reached a new milestone: our first field trials are officially underway! For the first time, our #SuperAA protein-producing potatoes are grown in a field, and this step brings us closer to scaling production and proving the true potential of molecular farming. With the capacity to harvest up to three tons of potatoes, we’re laying the foundation to transform the way functional proteins are produced sustainably, efficiently, and at scale. This is just the beginning. The future of food starts here, and we’re excited to share every step of the journey. Curious to learn more? We asked Maya Sapir-Mir, Co-founder of PoLoPo and 2022 #CollerCompetition winner, "How did you start your startup?" I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, and pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biology seemed like the natural choice since it interested me. I finished my degree. I still hadn't figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up, so I went on to get my Master's in Biology. I focused on plant research. I really loved both the program and the research, and I excelled at it. And that's when... I still had no clue what I wanted to be when I grew up. So I went for a PhD. Then a post-doc after that. I spent 15 years in academia, gained an enormous amount of knowledge about science and life, but still couldn't figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. Then my lab partner, Dr. Raya Liberman-Aloni, and I got together for a brainstorming session and realized the huge potential of turning plants into protein factories. After several years of research, we knew exactly which protein to express and in which plant. All we needed was courage. When everything finally lined up, we faced a decision - it was now or never. We threw ourselves into it completely. We didn't have any connections in the #FoodTech industry, no money to bootstrap, and all we had was a presentation (which looking back, was far from impressive). We realized we needed guidance from either an accelerator or startup competition. That was the year we decided to get ourselves out there. We met with every investor, incubator, mentor, and program we could find. That's how we ended up at Coller. They offered #OfficeHours - four tables with an expert from a different field at each one - fifteen minutes per table, and we walked away with tons of valuable advice. We put every bit of it into practice. We never thought we'd make it past the first round of the competition. We never thought we'd make it to the semifinals. We never thought we'd reach the finals. There were 13 outstanding startups in the finals and I was last to present. The moment I got up there - total blackout. I stopped mid-way, took some deep breaths, and searched for Raya's face in the crowd. We never thought we'd win. But the Coller Center believed in us and our idea. So what's the idea? What's the most amazing plant on Earth? That's right. The #potato. We transformed potatoes into #protein factories. Just to be clear, you don't eat the potato - it serves as a vessel for producing and storing protein - the same protein found in egg whites. Today we produce protein powder that can completely replace egg proteins in the food industry. For the last 3 years, I've been running a startup as CEO, and I finally know what I want to be when I grow up. The #egg industry is ripe for disruption, and true change requires collaboration across technologies and industries. No single company or solution can achieve this transformation alone. Companies like Just Egg, Yo Egg, Innovopro, and The EVERY Company are leading the way with innovative solutions. At PoLoPo, we believe #molecularfarming can complement these efforts by creating scalable, cost-effective animal proteins directly from plants. Here’s to joining forces to build a future where sustainable, ethical, and diverse egg alternatives redefine the food system. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eDhEuhpt Thank you, Edible Planet Ventures, for this interview!

  • Although our solution makes egg protein production sustainable, it doesn't mean this is where we stop. At PoLoPo, we recognize that true #sustainability encompasses every aspect of our operations, including the cultivation of the potatoes we use. That's why we're proud to announce our membership in the Potato Sustainability Alliance (PSA). The PSA is a collaborative network of growers, supply chain partners, non-profit organizations, and advisors dedicated to enhancing the economic, environmental, and social aspects of potato production. By joining this alliance, we commit to advancing sustainable practices throughout the entire potato value chain, ensuring that our innovations benefit both people and the planet.

  • At PoLoPo, we believe the future of food relies on open collaboration. Our latest partnership with CSM Ingredients exemplifies this, as we join forces to bring a reliable, price-stable alternative egg protein powder to the baking industry. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gGgtydfV With CSM, we’re not just launching a product. We’re building a partnership rooted in trust and shared goals. Together, we’re creating solutions that make sense for manufacturers and meet the demands of a changing food system. Reliable ingredients, reliable partners—that’s what drives impact. Thank you, URIKA PARTNERS and CSM's team, for supporting this mutual growth! Uri Weinheber, PhD. Ilanit Kabessa Gordon Grimm Christian Sobolta Marco Spaggiari Betina Tabah, PhD 🙏

  • Back from The Future of Protein Production in Amsterdam and still riding the energy! Maya joined Stacy, Katharina, Drew, and Winston for a panel, tackling everything from scaling hurdles to hybrid solutions. No potatoes were harmed, but minds were definitely blown! 🤯😆 And a big shoutout to Raya for her stellar pitch on PoLoPo’s mission to turn humble spuds into sustainable protein stars! 🥔--> 🥚 ! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth—we loved connecting!  If you missed us, drop us a message!
