** Fixed-Wing UAVs Used by the Myanmar Army ** From October 22, 2024, to at least February 1, 2025, Myanmar’s Army forces have been using fixed-wing UAVs modified for use as improvised loitering munitions to target militias in regions across the country where active fighting is ongoing. The areas targeted are Kayin State in the east, Mon State in the south and Rakhine State in the west. The remains of at least two distinct UAV models have been documented following the attacks on militia bases and positions. The more common model in use is a lightweight, delta-shaped plastic UAV with an electric motor located at the rear. This design enables it to dive toward the target and explode upon impact. The use of a relatively uniform model of improvised loitering munitions follows a trend that began in late 2023, when the Myanmar Army started the serial production of both armed UAV ammunition and loitering munitions. These developments highlight the growing importance of armed UAVs in Myanmar Army’s combat strategy, aiming to both produce a tie-breaking countermeasure to successful opposition raids on army bases throughout the previous year and to make attacks more efficient. ** PBIED with Backup RC Initiation System, Yemen ** On December 31, 2024, Project Masam’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) experts successfully neutralized a PBIED found in Al-Dhale Province, Yemen. The PBIED was fitted with a double initiation system: a primary system for initiation by a suicide bomber and a secondary RC receiver, used as a backup system for remote activation by another handler if necessary. PBIEDs with a double initiation system that incorporate an RC system for backup are uncommon, especially in Yemen. Though no organization has been linked to the PBIED found in Al-Dhale, the recent use of this TTP in Yemen is noteworthy and poses a challenge to both local and international security forces, as well as to EOD technicians. ** Iranian Weapons in Sudan ** In recent years, Iran’s influence in Africa, particularly in Sudan, has become increasingly evident. Sudan has emerged as a key destination for Iranian arms transfers, aimed at strengthening and supporting the country militarily. This collaboration is reinforced by agreements that facilitate the exchange of weapons and military equipment. Among the Iranian-manufactured weapons observed in the region are anti-tank guided missiles, mortar bombs, landmines, rockets and UAVs. These weapons not only underscore Iran’s expanding footprint in Africa but also highlight Sudan’s critical role as a logistical and operational base for Iran’s military ambitions. ** USVs Designed for Carrying UAVs Used by Ukrainian Forces in Maritime Operations ** In early December 2024, Ukrainian official sources released footage showcasing unmanned surface vessels designed to carry weaponized FPV racing drones. These were deployed by the Ukrainian Navy in a series of successful attacks along the Crimean coastline. At the end of December 2024, images surfaced on Russian war-oriented Telegram channels showing a damaged Ukrainian USV washed ashore near Crimea. The images suggest that this USV was also equipped to carry FPV racing drones. This development represents a significant advancement in the tactical capabilities of Ukrainian unmanned vessels, greatly enhancing their effectiveness in coastal and maritime operations. ** Fiber-Optic Drone Proliferation in the Ukraine–Russia War ** Since early 2024, fiber-optic drones have proliferated on the battlefield in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war. Fiber-optic drones, also referred to as wire-guided drones, differ from the common drone presently deployed in that they are guided through an optical fiber cable rather than wireless communication. This design makes them resistant to electronic warfare, though they carry smaller payloads, have shorter ranges and are more expensive. While Russia led the development of fiber-optic drones, Ukraine has quickly closed the gap. Now both sides are deploying them in large numbers for the first time.
