It was a privilege to introduce Maria Bridson to our members to discuss Modern Slavery. Maria gave members a fascinating and eyeopening update on the scale of modern slavery around the world and here on the Island. There are plenty of cases that take place right in front of us. The victims deserve our diligence and rely on us reporting questionable activity. Are any premises occupied by numerous people? Do you see people leaving early for work, eyes cast down? Please do not ignore the problem and issues. We would encourage everyone to write to their MHK to raise awareness and push for effective legislation. At work, you should examine your compliance procedures and check to see how your client companies, suppliers or clients might be involved in the slave trade. There are more slaves today than during the slave trade. Let's all take action to stop it where we can. Juan Moore President

We are pleased to share our President, Juan Moore's thoughts on the recent failings of Tom Moore's charity.
As a governance professional and someone who advises on Charity governance this story makes for difficult reading. There are some basic principals that charities must follow at all times: -Trustees should not benefit from charity assets -Trustees should be independent and act in the interests of the trust at all times - Care must be taken in employing trustees as executives, even if they step down as trustee. The potential for abuse is clear. -There should be sufficient diversity on the board to ensure good governance and experience. - A conflicts of interest register should be kept. Where conflicts arise the trustee should leave the meeting as the matter is discussed. Those in charge must remember the purpose of the trust and understand the responsibility they have taken on when agreeing to act as trustee. Charitable funds are public funds. We are often asked if those establishing a charity can be paid. The alarm bells sound, and we then ask what the actual purpose is. If it is to do good for worthy causes that you are passionate about, that is great. If it is to earn a salary from a passion, that is not a charity but a business plan. Without charities society would come to a halt, but trustees must act in the interests of the charity at all times. Please contact us for advice on your charity. We offer large discounts for all our charitable advice. #governance #charities https://lnkd.in/g5jqzfzP

The London Institute of Banking and Finance, in collaboration with the UCM and the Department of Education, Sport and Culture have devised a Financial Services Apprenticeship Programme whereby employers can put forward members of staff to undertake a HNC for business (level 4 qualification) and an appropriate professional qualification, which would be the initial stage of STEP or CGI for the TCSP market. Employers would have to commit to allowing 1 day per weekday release for apprentices to attend the UCM and full funding for the HNC and 30% of the professional qualification would be funded by the IOM Government. See attached slides for further information. We have been very supportive of this initiative and assisted the Banking Institute in ensuring a CGI module was include. This programme will provide a good grounding in various disciplines with knowledge and understanding of other sectors. This will give school leavers who might not wish to attend university an additional option. We would like to thank the Bankers, and especially Colin Peters, for not giving up on this project and seeing it to fruition. Please consider this scheme for your staff. Juan Moore President
