Would you willingly poison a fish tank? When asked to spit toothpaste mixed saliva (after brushing) into a fish tank, most of us immediately refuse because we instinctively know it’s harmful to aquatic life. Yet, every day, we pollute water streams with harmful chemicals from toothpaste and other "personal hygiene" products — often without realizing the impact that they have on the planet's hygiene. Traditional alternatives often hold the key to dealing with this challenge, but they too, if scaled to the level of cities today, might yield disastrous results for #lifebelowwater. This highlights that the issue lies more in "scale" than in the product itself. It's time we put limits to growth, and stopped harping on about "is it scalable". True #GreenBuildings are made from locally sourced natural materials like mud, thatch, bamboo, etc. These materials originate from the soil and go back into the soil at the end of their life, creating a building that #coexists with its environment. In contrast, many urban ‘green buildings’ rely on green certifications, which is nothing but a conventional building with a relatively lower carbon (#energy, #water, material, etc.) footprint. #Local languages often connect profoundly to #nature and #community, as we witnessed firsthand while working with fellows from the GreenHub @RoyalEnfield Responsible Tourism program in Tezpur, Assam. One of the fellows from Arunachal Pradesh’s Adi community shared that the elephant, the largest animal in the jungle, is called 'Cteh,' derived from 'C' (big) and 'teh' (animal). This reflects a deep, instinctive understanding of the natural world. Moreover, in his community, when addressing elders, respect is shown by introducing oneself with a combination of one’s name and their father’s — a meaningful practice that reinforces bonds between generations.
