The caste system has come back in a new way Truck drivers often get a bad rap. To the extent that families don’t want to wed their daughters to truck drivers since they are away for so long. To add to that, so many cases of rampant drug abuse and prostitution among drivers lead them to get bad reputation. It’s almost like they are a lower caste. But why did this happen ? It’s probably because of the tough conditions. Long time away from family, poor working environment and being pushed into pulling 14-16 hour shifts To add to this their workplace. The truck cabin has no AC, no adjustability and extremely poor ergonomics. No wonder they get so many injuries and get into so many accidents. While it might seem trivial, basic attention to ergonomics, adjustability and air conditioning greatly improves the driving environment. Time and time again it’s is proven that such basic modifications improve productivity and more importantly: safety. Just look at the logistic costs for countries like the USA, they as a country have safer, more ergonomic trucks and enjoy a much lower logistic cost overall. This might be a very simplistic view but it is undeniable that we need to provide safer, better designed trucks to our drivers. The reward will be a better life for truck drivers, a safer one and one where, at least at their workplace they get the dignity they deserve. Better productivity will always follow. We help make great cabins for trucks, buses and tractors. Do reach out if you’d like to know more. This trend is bound to increase Recently Ashok Leyland received an historic 2104 bus order from the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). This Included a fully built bus as per the CMVR standards. This was never the norm before. Bus chassis were bought and then a custom bus body was built on it. But why fully built now? https://lnkd.in/dvt5XTYD There was a time when most buses were sold on as a bare chassis, the body work was then built on top of it as it was an area of major cost reduction. Also India being such a diverse country, each state/fleet operator wanted a different specification and format. Large bus manufacturers would have never been able to create enough variants to fulfill the needs of the entire market and everything workout just fine Now scenarios are changing through establishment of standards. Safety and consistency being some of the drivers of it. Now there are safety standards that the transportation board wants to adhere to, and there are certain quality standards they want to maintain. Which works great for large organizations like Ashok Leyland, Tata CV and the others as they are great at creating safe, standard products at scale. They have high quality vendors and world class design processes that can build great products at a great pricing. This trend is likely to continue and most bus bodies will soon be factory built. Though the India market is going to need customizations, even this order contains custom configuration that’s designed specific for the needs for MSRTC. But how does a company like Ashok Leyland create custom buses at Low volumes? (2100 is low volume in manufacturing speak). The answer is using standardization and using simple low Capex processes like thermoforming. They are great at producing high quality parts at low volumes. We’ve been building cabin interiors for a long time. If you want to know how we include customizations without major capex. This might be most efficient truck in the world While the shift to electric or hydrogen for trucks is undeniable, diesel trucks aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. We might see them being sold well into the later half of this century. Here's the US Department of Energy’s joint research project with long haul truck manufacturer Kenworth. This is a great study to show that the humble diesel truck has a long way to go. And as other greener technologies need their time to mature we still need to make a difference now. https://lnkd.in/dPw9wUkf This truck has some real innovation with a hybrid system that achieves 55.7% engine efficiency (modern cars are at about 35-40%), and an extreme focus on reducing aerodynamic drag. (Force that air exerts on the truck when it moves forward). They were able to reduce a whopping 48% drag from their baseline which was already more efficient than trucks in India. While this is still a concept it provides an important goal post on how much more efficient trucks can be made and regardless what fuel strategy we are going to need more efficient design and this concept opens up a few very interesting directions While it might not be possible to create this type of vehicle in India right now, Making minor changes and additions to current vehicles are a great start. While it is always a challenge to make these sort of vehicles at low volumes. Here low capex processes like thermoforming make it possible on a business level. World over thermoforming is used to make truck exteriors and cab interiors. If you want to know how such vehicles are made possible. India needs to fix it’s logistic costs In the recent World Bank's Logistics Performance Index India improved 6 positions and was ranked 38 out of 168 countries. We improved from a average logistic cost of 9-10% of GDP in 2011-2012 to 8-9% in 2022. All this while the global standard is 6-7% of GDP https://lnkd.in/dJrnJUxh While overall logistic costs are a multi stakeholder problem that includes planning, road infra, fuel costs and vehicle efficiencies all have a part to play. But the efficiency of the vehicle is a major factor that still needs a lot of work in. Designing for logistics in India is tough. With a wide range of problems statements, a wide range of operating conditions, all shapes and sizes of cargo. Only way is to develop a wide range of vehicles, having multiple configurations and accessories such that customers can purchase and spec out the best possible vehicle for themselves. But how do you deliver specialized accessories/products for niches that are not going to be sold in very large quantities? Here it’s essential to consider capex light processes like thermoforming, LFI, RIM or even SMC that can make small but significant improvements in products without needing too much investment in tooling. These can help can design more specialized products even in tight budgets Ultimately companies will have to think out of the box, one great source of inspiration is what's been tried and tested outside India. If you want to know how thermoforming is helping products stand out overseas. Ask us how ? P.S. there is a little confusion around the real logistic cost as a percentage of GDP, there are varying figures and calculating methods. But the overarching theme is, there is an improving trend but much is to be done to reach global standards. The trucks of the future will look significantly different than today. If you look at the sales pitch of any of the truck manufacturers you will see total cost of ownership and fuel efficiency being the two of more important aspects of any product. At current highway speeds (80kmph) Aerodynamic drag accounts for about 50% of the energy wasted in long haul trucks. Here even a 10% reduction in aerodynamic drag will improve the fuel efficiency by over 6%. Source: https://lnkd.in/dKps-h-i The aerodynamic loads increase with the square of the speed. Which means aerodynamics losses will increase greatly as the average highway speed of trucks increases. Considering India’s commitment to improving infrastructure the average highway speed is slated to improve greatly. Manufacturers right now give aero kits that reduce aerodynamic drag as an optional accessory. It adds costs but doesn’t work very well without a containerised system installed in the truck. As the market continues its push towards more efficiency. These aero kits which are currently given as optional will eventually become a standard fitment. Standardization will be key purely because it will be the most efficient way forward. Thermoforming is a great way to make an aero kits for trucks in a very capital efficient manner. Plastics though lightweight, need to last. Repair and maintenance costs are a sensitive matter for truck owners. If you want to know how to create aerokits that last without massive capex. Kitna deti hai ?! Secret to truck sales in India is efficiency Vehicles in India are sold on fuel efficiency, Fuel efficiency was the major selling point for marutis or splendors. In corporate speak the total cost of ownership (TCO ) has historically dictated how well the product will get accepted in the market. This is even more true when it comes to commercial vehicles, today in India the logistics space is immensely competitive. Logistics firms run on razor thin margins and are always under immense cost pressure. For these businesses the vehicle being even 4-5% more fuel efficient could make a massive difference in profitability. Ultimately the most efficient vehicle is going to steal the market simply because of lower running costs. According to the Department of Energy efficiency and Renewable energy, USA. a 10% reduction in weight can provide 6-8% improvement in fuel economy The same is true for EVs 10% reduction in weight translates to 4-6% improvement in range. Source: https://lnkd.in/dR8EskST More efficient vehicles are much better for the environment too!. Trucks represent 28-30% of diesel consumption in India. While buses represent 9-10% of total diesel consumption which goes to say that 37%-40% of diesel consumption of India is commercial vehicles. Thus even minor improvements in efficiency will translate to massive CO2 reduction. American and European markets have unlocked much higher efficiency adopting more aerodynamic designs and lightweight materials. This level of focus is yet to come in India. Thermoformed plastics provide a great way to reduce weight and improve the aerodynamics of commercial vehicles. OEs across the world have improved their efficiency using thermoformed parts.
