Today, we honor the legacy of Tilka Manjhi, a true hero of the Adivasi community and India’s first freedom fighter, on his death anniversary. Born in 1750 in Sultanganj, Bihar, Tilka Manjhi led a valiant rebellion against the oppressive British East India Company long before the 1857 revolt. His unwavering courage and determination to protect his people and their lands sparked a spirit of resistance that remains an inspiration to this day. Tilka Manjhi was brutally executed in 1785, but his sacrifice marked the beginning of India's long struggle for freedom. Let us remember and celebrate his extraordinary contributions to our history, his fight for justice, and his undying spirit.

About us
WHAT IS ADIVASI LIVES MATTER? Adivasi Lives Matter is an attempt to talk about Adivasis and tribals of India in a concerted manner. We aspire to highlight the richness of Adivasis, their culture, customs, traditional knowledge and environmental conservation as well as stories of the violations of their rights. WHY WAS IT STARTED? Adivasis (Scheduled Tribes) in India constitute 8.6% of the country population, totalling 104 million people, which is 40% of the world’s indigenous population. With over 700 scheduled tribes in India who speak more than 1000 languages, the sheer diversity of Adivasis is not reflected either in the media or news. Adivasi Lives Matter originated from the shortage of visually rich content about the diversity, enormity, and anonymity of the Adivasis on social media. A small group of volunteers from the development and media content sector, we aim to change the situation by creating engaging visual content to create and sustain a conversation about Adivasis, one of the most marginalised groups of India.

On 9 January 1899, hundreds of tribals sacrificed their lives alongside Birsa Munda in his Ulgulan against British oppression. Birsa dreamed of Munda Raj – a land free from exploitation and injustice. With arrows and unwavering courage, the Mundas stood tall against colonial forces. Though Birsa's life was brief, his legacy continues to ignite the fight for tribal rights. Today, we honor and salute all those brave tribals who were martyred in this historic struggle. Ulgulan – the Great Tumult – lives on, inspiring generations to stand for justice and freedom.
