🎯 The Art of Test Design: Learning from Real-World Collaboration When it comes to test design, some of the most impactful results come from collaboration and real-world insights. It’s not just about functionality—it’s about envisioning the product from every possible angle: performance, scalability, resilience, and most importantly, the end-user experience. A great example of this was our experience with Lorenzo, a healthcare product we were working on back in 2009. Before deployment at early adopters like Bury Primary Care Trust and Morecambe Acute Trust, we formed a model community of clinicians from the NHS who came down to Chennai to test the product for its intended use. These clinicians brought invaluable insights from the field. Over several days, they rigorously tested the product in real-world scenarios, helping us uncover edge cases and usability issues that we wouldn’t have identified otherwise. Each evening, we held daily triaging sessions to prioritize defects and requirements for the next delivery cycle. This collaborative process not only improved the product but also set a benchmark for how testing should be user-centric and impactful. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘆 Over 15 years ago, I encountered one of the most complex product deliveries in my career. A 1500-strong team, 64,000 test cases, and 100,000 defects later, I realized the hard truth: 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿. Initially, I faced a program riddled with inefficiencies—overlapping functionality, misaligned priorities, and unnecessary layers of complexity. One defining moment was when I met a team of 15 engineers, crammed into a conference room, waiting for work that never came. It was a wake-up call. By reducing excess and fostering alignment, we optimized processes, adopted a shift-left approach, and brought automation to the forefront. The Spirit of Commitment: A Balancing Act Hard work isn’t about the number of hours—it’s about meeting commitments and making things happen. It’s about immersing yourself in what you do and finding fulfillment in the journey. This belief has guided my life and work. My father would leave home by 5 a.m. and return by 8 p.m., a ritual he continued until we urged him to retire. He gave us the stability we needed and taught me resilience—how to show up every day, no matter what. Early in my career at CG Smith, there were nights when I worked until morning, went home to freshen up, and returned. That's not daily but occasionally. Leading the delivery of Lorenzo( A comprehensive HIS) from Chennai, I worked 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily for five months to see the project through. Today, I work from 9:30 a.m. to midnight, not because of the hours, but to meet commitments and make things happen. And when I am tired, I retire for a good night's sleep to rejuvenate and resume. Of course, there are breaks for meals and tea. At AlgoShack, when a project estimated at 75 person-months actually required 420 person-months of effort, we didn’t compromise. We added skilled people, gave them time, and improved algoQA to support them. This is what defines our “unconstrained delivery.” I don’t schedule meetings before 10 a.m., after 7 p.m., or over the weekends. I believe in creating a space where we honor work-life balance while maintaining commitments. While we are compassionate and patient, we are ambitious and determined to push boundaries. We honor commitments and expect that to be reciprocated. Work-life balance, meeting promises, and pushing limits—these define us. Hard work becomes enjoyable when driven by purpose and passion.
