🏃♂️ Nurturing Mental Wellbeing: A Focal Point for Elderly Residents in Old Age Homes 🤼 As the population ages, the significance of mental wellbeing in old age has come to the forefront of societal discussions. One context where this is particularly observed is in old age homes. These facilities, designed to provide care and support for seniors, underscore the importance of addressing mental health concerns among the elderly. Sahara Vridhashram has recognized the importance of mental wellbeing and have implemented various initiatives to address these challenges. Some of the key strategies include: 1. Community Engagement Programs: They are increasingly organizing community engagement programs, encouraging residents to participate in healthcare campaigns providing free treatment, medicines and counselling by visiting rural places. These sessions not only provide mental stimulation but also foster a sense of surety that there are initiatives and people around us who are willing to help us out if we ask for it. 2. Counselling and Support Services: Integration of counselling sessions and dedicated presence of a counsellor in an old age home is still an aspiration to be fulfilled. There are two dedicated care takers – a male and a female caretaker, who look after the well-being of the elderly, do a magnificent job. Some of the services which attracted our attention were – providing individuals clothes as per their choice, comfort and medical ease as many are challenged in many ways.   3. Health and Wellness Programs: Regular physical exercise has been proven to have positive effects on mental health. Sahara Vridhashram has health and wellness programs that cater to the unique needs of seniors, promoting not only physical but also mental wellbeing. They dedicate a lot of focus on Hygiene, which is often neglected at other old age homes, was a clear cut USP here - focused daily cleaning, ventilation, clean and separated food preparation area, separate dining area, bifurcated toilets, proving haircut and nail cutting facilities, physiotherapy sessions and weekly doctor visits. 4. Technology Integration: To combat feelings of isolation, Sahara Vridhashram provides 24*7 Television shows to the residents. They sit and watch together which is a great way to form bonds and belonging in a homely atmosphere. Each individual comes with their own set of challenges, whether physical, emotional, or psychological and by their medical history, mobility limitations, cognitive abilities, and past traumas, personalized plans can provide a holistic approach to care that addresses the whole person. Consider the case of Mr. Kumar, a handicapped individual who lost his right leg in an accident. His personalized care plan includes provisions for mobility aids such as a wheelchair and handrails, as well as physiotherapy sessions to improve strength and flexibility. Additionally, there are residents who were former beggars with low self-esteem, who benefit from tailored recreational activities such as medical therapy and group communication to boost confidence and social skills. And then there are elderly individuals abandoned by her family in her twilight years, whose personalized plan focuses on emotional support, companionship, and a sense of belonging within the community. By addressing the specific needs and preferences of each resident, personalized plans enhance quality of life, promote independence, and foster a sense of dignity and self-worth. 🚚 Empowered Truckers: Breaking Barriers, Saving Lives 🚚 At Ashray, we recognized the unique challenges faced by truckers, a high-risk group in constant motion, making clinical testing for HIV/AIDS and STDs essential yet challenging. Through our tireless efforts and collaborative partnerships, we strived to ensure that no member of this vulnerable community was left unscreened. Our dedicated team conducted ice-breaking sessions and distributed informative leaflets, facilitating early and easy screening for HIV/AIDS and STDs among truckers. We worked closely with the Jharkhand State AIDS Control Society (JSACS) to provide crucial support on the ground, ensuring that vital testing services were accessible to all. Advocacy played a crucial role in our mission, as gaining access to truckers' colonies and establishing partnerships with clinics required persistent effort. Despite challenges, our commitment to serving the community remained unwavering, and we were grateful for the recognition of our hard work. Through our motto of "Serve until Sustain," we prioritized collaboration and convergence, working hand in hand with JSACS to maximize our impact. Visits and training sessions conducted by JSACS enhanced the efficiency of our project deliverables, enabling us to provide doorstep services to truckers with greater effectiveness. From awareness campaigns to pamphlet distributions and clinical interventions, every aspect of our work was geared towards saving lives and bringing about positive change. During 2019, we had the privilege of witnessing a heart warming saga unfold, one that began with tragedy but ultimately blossomed into a tale of hope and reunion. In a poignant moment captured at Ranchi Railway station, we had the honour of bidding farewell to a young Pahariya girl and her family, embarking on a journey back to their roots in Sahebganj. This reunion marked the culmination of a long and arduous journey, one that saw the girl liberated from the clutches of trafficking and reunited with her loved ones after years of separation and darkness. As she embraced her parents with tears of joy streaming down their cheeks, we were reminded of the profound impact that collective effort and unwavering dedication can have on the lives of those in need. The journey from despair to delight, from isolation to reunion, serves as a testament to the power of resilience and the indomitable spirit of the human soul. This remarkable transformation was made possible through the tireless efforts of various stakeholders, including the State Commission for Women in Jharkhand and Gujarat, the Department of Police, and the Railway authorities. Through their collaborative approach and unwavering commitment to the cause, they breathed new life into the Mission 3 Rs: Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration. The successful resolution of this case not only brings solace to the hearts of the individuals involved but also serves as a beacon of hope for society at large. It reaffirms our collective responsibility to stand against injustice, to advocate for the vulnerable, and to strive for a world where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
