This incident took place in the Kombaru reserve area in Karnataka, India. A leopard was chasing a dog, and the dog, in an attempt to escape, entered a bathroom through a window, which was locked from the outside. The leopard followed the dog inside, and both got trapped in the bathroom. When the dog saw the leopard, it panicked and quietly sat in a corner. It couldn’t even bark. Although the leopard was hungry and had been chasing the dog, it didn’t attack or eat the dog. The leopard could have easily pounced on the dog for a meal, but instead, both animals remained in separate corners of the bathroom together for almost twelve hours. During these twelve hours, the leopard also stayed calm. The forest department eventually focused on the leopard and captured it with a tranquilizing dart. Now, the question arises: why didn’t the leopard attack the dog, despite being hungry and capable of doing so? Wildlife researchers have answered this question: according to them, wild animals are highly sensitive to their freedom. As soon as they feel their freedom is taken away, they experience deep distress, and even hunger takes a backseat. Their natural drive to hunt and eat diminishes. Freedom and happiness are interconnected. The freedom to think, act, and live as we wish is essential for our well-being.
