Highlights from the session: Dr. Satya N Gupta authored his first technical book titled "EOIP" approximately 20 years ago, focusing on VoIP and next-generation networks. Deepak Bajaj acknowledges Dr. Gupta's journey as an inspiration for first-time authors, emphasizing the effort and thought behind his work. The name "Blue Town" is derived from Bluetooth technology, originally created in Denmark. Dr. Gupta encountered the founders during a flight and discussed the potential for Wi-Fi technology in India. After a productive eight-hour brainstorming session in Dubai, the founders decided to explore opportunities in India, initially skeptical but ultimately convinced by Dr. Gupta’s insights about the Indian market. Dr. Gupta started as a consultant for Bluetown, eventually becoming the country head and now serving as chairman and founder. His role has evolved alongside the company's growth. Dr. Gupta developed an innovative business model to provide broadband services in rural areas, addressing the gap in data access. His second book, "Long Tail," discusses this research. The managed service model leverages existing telecommunications infrastructure to create Wi-Fi hotspots in underserved areas, enabling better data access for communities without heavy investments from telcos. Hotspots are strategically placed in community-centric locations such as schools, hospitals, and post offices to maximize usage and connectivity for residents. Dr. Gupta's approach involves investing in hotspot creation and offering it as a service to telcos, utilizing their spare capacity to bridge the last-mile connectivity gap.
