United Breweries Ltd. Decision to Halt #BeerSupply in #Telangana: A Wake-Up Call for the Indian Alcohol Industry The recent decision by UBL to suspend beer supply to Telangana has sent shockwaves through the Indian alcohol industry. As a major player in the market, UBL's move highlights the complex challenges faced by manufacturers in a heavily regulated sector Key Factors Behind the Decision 1️⃣ Stagnant Pricing: Beer prices in Telangana have remained unchanged since 2019, despite significant increases in production costs. This has led to mounting losses for UBL and other manufacturers. 2️⃣ Unpaid Dues: The Telangana Beverages Corporation Limited (#TGBCL) reportedly owes substantial amounts to UBL and other suppliers, with estimates ranging from ₹658.95 crore to ₹3,900 crore across the industry. 3️⃣ Regulatory Constraints: India's state-controlled liquor distribution model limits pricing flexibility, forcing companies to operate on thin margins. Immediate Consequences ➡️ UBL's share price dropped by 7%, reflecting investor concerns. Telangana, one of India's top beer markets, faces potential shortages of popular brands like #Kingfisher and #Heineken. ➡️ The standoff could impact state revenue, as UBL contributes over ₹4,500 crore annually to Telangana's coffers. Broader Implications for the Industry ➡️ This situation underscores the need for a balanced approach to alcohol regulation in India. While state control aims to ensure affordability and responsible consumption, it must also consider the financial viability of manufacturers. ➡️Industry-Wide Concerns: The Brewers Association of India (#BAI) has highlighted that the issues faced by UBL are not isolated, with the entire alcobev sector grappling with similar challenges across states. ➡️Policy Reconsideration: This incident may prompt other state governments to reassess their pricing and payment mechanisms to prevent similar conflicts. The Path Forward To resolve this impasse and prevent future disruptions, stakeholders must come together to find a sustainable solution: ➡️Price Revision Mechanism: Implement a transparent, periodic price review system that accounts for inflation and production cost increases. ➡️Timely Payments: Establish a more efficient payment cycle to prevent the accumulation of large dues. ➡️Balanced Regulation: Explore models that maintain state oversight while allowing for more market-responsive pricing. This situation in Telangana serves as a critical case study for the entire Indian alcohol industry, highlighting the need for collaborative solutions between manufacturers, state governments, and regulatory bodies. What are your thoughts on balancing state regulation with industry sustainability? How can we work towards a more equitable system that benefits all stakeholders in the alcohol ecosystem? https://lnkd.in/g_cAYcks

💡 Small Labels, Big Problems: What We Learned During a Liquor Store Visit Most liquor stores in India are counter shops where customers don’t browse aisles; they ask for what they need at the counter. This setup often leads to long queues, especially during peak hours or near closing time. For retailers, being fast and accurate is crucial to managing the rush. To help, we at BottleShop. introduced a solution. Retailers place bottles in front of a barcode scanner, and the system bills them instantly. It’s quick, reduces errors, and helps storeowners track stock without daily manual checks. But here’s the challenge. For some miniature bottles, like Bacardi Green Apple, Greater Than’s miniatures (Nao Spirits & Beverages Pvt Ltd), Indri Single Malt miniatures (Piccadily Distilleries) the barcodes are tiny. Since the labels shrink to fit the smaller bottles, the barcodes also become smaller—too small for barcode readers to scan. This small detail causes big delays. Retailers have to type in product details manually or leave these bottles out of the system. Both options slow them down—right when speed matters most. We think brands can help fix this. By designing barcodes that are easy to scan, even on small bottles, brands can make it easier for retailers to sell their products quickly and without errors. This collaboration between brands and tech can make a big difference—not just for storeowners but for customers too. What’s your take? How can we work together to solve issues like these? Is banning liquor delivery the solution, or are we missing the point? A petition before the Supreme Court calls for stricter age checks at liquor stores and a ban on e-commerce delivery, claiming it could lead to more underage drinking. But let’s take a step back: 👉 We already have tools like Aadhaar for verification—shouldn’t we focus on enforcing what’s in place instead of banning delivery altogether? 👉 If alcohol delivery is “risky,” what stops underage individuals from accessing stocked alcohol at home? Isn’t this more about parenting and awareness than logistics? 👉 Global Perspective: In the United States, e-commerce alcohol sales surged by over 100% in 2020, with platforms implementing robust age verification systems to ensure compliance. Australia witnessed a 12.1% growth in online alcohol sales, with stringent regulations in place to prevent underage access. At BottleShop, we believe the answer lies in smarter systems, not bans: ✅ AI-powered age checks at the point of sale—whether in-store or online. ✅ Purchase monitoring to identify unusual patterns and flag misuse. ✅ Streamlined compliance tools to help retailers follow the law effortlessly. The real issue isn’t delivery; it’s building a culture of responsibility—through technology, education, and accountability. What do you think? Are bans the solution, or do we need smarter approaches? Let’s hear your thoughts! 💬👇 #RethinkRegulation #LiquorTech #AIForGood #BottleShop #ResponsibleRetail https://lnkd.in/gAzEU-47

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the 11th edition of the Spiritz Conclave and Achievers' Awards 2024, presented by Allied Blenders & Distillers Ltd. and powered by Pernod Ricard. Kudos to Shalini Kumar and Bishan Kumar of Spiritz Magazine for organising such a fantastic event! This year, the #alcobev industry in India is set to cross a milestone—over 400M cases sold! 🎉 The day was filled with insightful discussions on the industry's role in shaping a "Viksit Bharat," with panels diving deep into topics like #investment, #employment, and #innovation under the Make in India agenda. One of the sessions that stood out to me was the conversation on *Navigating Challenges for Manufacturing and Importing Alcohol Brands*, featuring industry leaders like Rajnish Singh, Raja Mukherji, Sumedh Singh Mandla, Nita Kapoor, Suresh Menon. From compliance and licensing to policy impacts on small and large importers, the session covered it all. A key highlight was Nita Kapoor's take on surrogate marketing and brand extensions—a timely topic as regulations continue to evolve. Post the discussions, the floor turned into a cocktail haven, with brands like #JackDaniels , #ZoyaGin , #RedElan Group, #EstuaryWater, #Suntori, #OreginGin showcasing their best. As the industry continues to evolve, I’m excited about how BottleShop. is contributing to this transformation not only in retail but across the entire supply chain —empowering both consumers and businesses at every level of the industry. It was a day full of learning, networking, and inspiration. Looking forward to seeing how the insights gained here will shape the future of our industry! #Alcobev #Innovation #ViksitBharat #SpiritzConclave #AI #BeverageIndustry #Networking #FutureOfLiquor
