Yesterday, I was interviewing a candidate who needed an efficient algorithm to solve one of the sub-problems. They realized the need for the algorithm but couldn’t recall its exact details. I asked: “How would you prompt ChatGPT?” They responded: “What’s the most efficient algorithm to do XYZ?” I followed up: “Would you open ChatGPT and try your prompt?” They said: “Wow, this is the first time I’m using ChatGPT in an interview!” The candidate then got their answer in 5 seconds. This interaction felt completely natural to me. With the rise of powerful LLM tools, I’ve started valuing “asking the right questions” far more than “memorizing knowledge.” Why would I penalize a candidate for not remembering a specific algorithm when that information is literally at their fingertips? In today’s world, the ability to identify the right problem and ask the right questions is way more important IMO. What do you think?
