The Centre for Healthcare had the privilege of hosting Prof. Niranjan S Janardhanan from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) School of Economics on January 13, 2025. Prof. Janardhanan presented important research on leadership transience in primary healthcare centres in Rajasthan, India, conducted in collaboration with Prof. Prakash Satyavageeswaran, Prof. Vedha Ponnappan, and Ms. Supriya SRINIVASA MADHAVAN. The study, based on interviews and observations, sheds light on a unique challenge: while Medical Officers (MOs) or the heads of primary healthcare centres (government-run units) typically serve for 2 years, their reportees—Grade 1 & 2 GNMs, ANMs, and LHVs—have an average tenure of 12 years. This disparity raises questions about the continuity and quality of leadership provided to the team and care provided to the communities. The study further highlights the "field magnet" effect, where strong leaders temporarily align the team's behaviour, only for this alignment to dissipate after their departure. The session concluded with an engaging discussion comparing leadership transience and its impacts across various institutions. Thanks to the participants for contributing to this thought-provoking conversation: Prof. Ashish Sachdeva, Dr. Ramakrishna Prasad, Dr. Sanjana Brahmawar Mohan, and our RA colleagues and friends in the PhD program. #Leadership #PrimaryHealthcare #ResearchInsights #TeamDynamics

Curious about how frequent leadership changes impact frontline employees in public healthcare units? Join us for an insightful seminar titled "Revolving Door of Leadership: Responsibility and Adaptation of Frontline Employees amid Leadership Transience," where Prof Niranjan S Janardhanan from the London School of Economics (LSE) will delve into this critical topic. Abstract: Employees in frontline organizations—i.e., employees in organizations directly involved in the delivery of public service—often have ambiguous role descriptions and develop responsibilities and repertoires of action based on the immediate relational context in which they operate. Prior research on the role of leadership in fostering role clarity and coordination in such contexts is limited. We examine the effects of leadership transience—i.e., constant changes in leadership—on employees operating at different points within the span of control of the leader. Using inductive qualitative data from 54 interviews and 138 hours of observation in primary healthcare centres in India, we demonstrate how employees expand and contract their roles and responsibilities with changes in leadership in the short term and develop general nonchalance towards leadership in the long term. 📅 Date: January 13, 2025 🕒 Time: 11:15 AM – 12:30 PM 📍 Venue: CR 3A-05 (please note the change in the venue) If you are interested in joining online, email us at cfh@iimu.ac.in to receive the Zoom link. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with groundbreaking research on leadership-frontline worker dynamics in public-sector healthcare units.
