  • There's Safety and Safety. Some People Follow Procedures, Others Create a Culture of Safety. Understand the four levels of safety engagement and master them all. You've experienced it: a colleague or manager enforcing a safety rule, but not truly understanding its importance. Rather than truly engage with safety, they primarily seek to check off a box and move on. Recognizable? This is Level 1 safety engagement. More importantly, we can distinguish three additional, higher levels of safety engagement that reflect how one can truly create a culture of safety. These are the four levels of safety engagement: Level 1 Safety Engagement - “Compliance” You follow safety procedures out of obligation and mainly look for ways to comply with the minimum requirements. You do what’s necessary to avoid getting into trouble. → Following safety rules to avoid negative consequences. Level 2 Safety Engagement - “Procedural Understanding” You follow safety procedures with a clear understanding of the reasons behind them. You seek to understand the facts and data that support safety protocols. → Learning the 'why' behind safety rules and applying them to enhance safety. Level 3 Safety Engagement - “Empathic Safety” You engage with safety from a place of empathy and care for your colleagues. You focus on understanding the risks from their perspective and aim to protect everyone’s well-being. → Creating a safety culture where everyone feels responsible for each other’s safety. Level 4 Safety Engagement - “Generative Safety” You engage with safety from a visionary perspective, looking for ways to improve and innovate. You focus on how safety practices can evolve and anticipate future risks. → Innovating and evolving safety practices to foresee and mitigate emerging risks. Levels 1, 2, and 3 are relatively straight forward: you engage with safety to comply with rules (Level 1), to understand the procedures (Level 2), or to connect and protect your colleagues (Level 3). Level 4, Generative Safety, is the transformative one. It means seeing beyond immediate requirements and connecting safety to a larger vision. If you manage to get your focus beyond compliance (which also comes in handy at Level 3…), allow your creativity and foresight to guide you, and open up to the idea that safety is an evolving practice, then you embrace the potential of Generative Safety. While not easy, it’s worth developing your Generative Safety skills. Because it’s where true innovation, foresight, and a sustainable safety culture originate. "Which level of safety engagement do you think is most common in your workplace—Compliance, Procedural Understanding, Empathic Safety, or Generative Safety? How do you think we can move from compliance to creating a true culture of safety? Share your thoughts and experiences below!" Website - https://lnkd.in/e62dyn_k
