FSSAI and FICCI Codex Cell conducted Codex Master Class on 18th October 2024 aimed at equipping professionals with a deeper understanding of Codex standards. The program was graced by the presence of Shri G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, IAS, Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI. He appreciated the efforts of FICCI for this initiative and strengthen the understanding of codex among industry stakeholders. During his inaugural address, Shri Rao emphasized on the importance of “safe and nutritious food”. “CODEX being an international body, we need to align our thought process with Codex Alimentarius Commission, particularly in the realm of WTO and food safety” he further added. Dr. Alka Rao, Advisor (Science & Standards & Regulations), FSSAI and Codex Contact Point, India emphasized the crucial role of trade in ensuring global food security. NCCP urged the industry to take a proactive approach by developing its own agenda and discussion papers. The inaugural session emphasized the importance of integrating Codex activities with the WTO-SPS framework to build a compelling narrative on the global stage. Officials from NCCP, along with members of the Codex Cell (CIFTI-FICCI), provided an overview of the fundamentals of Codex. From basics to achievements, the sessions were packed with detailed explanations on distinct Codex texts, various committees, the essential elements for success within the Codex framework, importance of Codex Procedural Manual and working of Codex with member countries and scientific bodies such as JECFA, JMPR, and JEMNU. The speakers encouraged participants to actively engage in the standard-setting process. A detailed step-by-step guide for submission of comments, and engagement in Codex process provided clarity on the entire process. Since food Safety is a ‘shared responsibility’, these sessions truly enabled delegates to be a part of India’s significant contribution to Codex through active involvement in various Codex committees and working groups. India’s achievements in various Codex Committees by presenting distinct case studies, important agenda items and expected outcomes of Codex trust fund were the key highlights of the masterclass.
