Are digital transactions are becoming popular with Indian farmers? How to accelerate the process of cashless digital transactions in rural India? India's digital payments industry is witnessing a huge surge, with transaction volumes growing by 42 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in FY 2023-24, according to a new report by PwC. Digital payment infrastructure, both online and offline, is rapidly expanding across India, including in Tier 2, 3, and 4 cities. The report projects that the industry will experience threefold growth, with transaction volumes set to rise from 159 billion in FY 2023-24 to 481 billion by FY 2028-29. India has traditionally been a cash based economy, especially in rural areas The adoption of digital payments has been driven by several factors, including government initiatives, improved internet connectivity, and the availability of affordable smartphones. However, there is still a significant gap between urban and rural areas in terms of digital payment adoption Financial Inclusion by which digital payments help farmers access financial services more easily, allowing them to receive subsidies, loans, and payments directly into their bank accounts , convenience, transparency, market access increases. Financial literacy programmes, partnerships with financial Institutions: Collaborating with banks and fintech companies to provide user-friendly digital payment solutions tailored to the needs of rural communities can enhance adoption. The adoption of innovations like soundboxes, merchant cross-selling, and new activation strategies have further fueled the use of digital payments by merchants, especially in rural segments that created trust around. Do farmers really need AI now, can they adopt this technology? Do AI really solves the humanisation recommendations ? Can farmers take informed decisions? The answer is Yes AI can , by World Economic Forum AI4AI Farmers participating in the programme saw 21% increase in chilli yields per acre, 9% reduction in pesticide use, 5% decrease in fertilizer usage 8% improvement in unit prices due to quality enhancements. As a consequence of these improvements, farmers have seen their incomes soar by more than INR 66,000 (around 800 USD) per acre per crop cycle, effectively doubling their earnings. These are sustainable and efficient agricultural practices. India’s first agriculture data exchange and agri data management framework. AI4AI initiative is the 'Saagu Baagu' pilot, developed in partnership with Telangana state government, in its Khammam district, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and implemented by Digital Green. The project has substantially improved the chili value chain for more than 7,000 farmers.
