"Since my childhood, I have always admired the wildlife surrounding me. As a post graduate zoology student, I spent my leisure time observing grassland animals ranging from insects to mammals. After completing my postgraduate studies, I interned with Dr. Vikram Aditya on a project focused on pangolins, where I had the opportunity to engage with tribal communities and learn about their hunting methods for different wild animals. Dr. Aditya had a strong desire to address the issue of wildlife hunting, and I was eager to contribute to his efforts. Following that I began collaborating with various organizations in the Eastern Ghats to expand my knowledge of the wildlife. In 2023, when I came across a social media advertisement from CWS, I talked to Dr. Aditya about it, applied, and got an opportunity to work with CWS. Upon joining CWS, I had the opportunity to engage with several specialists from different fields, which enhanced my understanding of wildlife and conservation. At the 2023 ATBC conference, I had the opportunity to meet Aneesh in Palakkad, thanks to Dr Aditya. After a deep interaction with him, my fascination with elephants increased significantly, motivating me to begin working on elephant conservation in the Eastern Ghats. This is how I became involved in the new elephant project Fun Fact: Being a Solapur, Maharashtrian born (close to the Western Ghats) I still find it mysterious how I managed to work in the Eastern Ghats for over six years." - Yogesh Pasul, Project Coordinator, Wildlife Hunting and Trade Program yogesh pasul #CWS #GreenJobs #StaffFeature #WildlifeConservation #EasternGhats #ElephantConservation #PangolinConservation #Biodiversity

Understanding their plight and conservation is vital for ensuring a balanced ecosystem. Join us this Saturday, 30th November 2024, 4 PM IST (2:30 AM PST), as we delve into the future of vulture conservation with experts Mr. Sachin Ranade (BNHS) and Dr. Rohan Shringarpure (WWF, India) in a special session with a focus on Northeast India. The Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR), located on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border is India’s 51st Tiger Reserve, acting as a continuation of the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala. Established in 2021, this reserve combines two prominent conservation areas – the Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel Sanctuary and the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary – covering a vast area of 101657.13 Ha. As a large contiguous forest corridor, the Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve serves as a habitat for many large mammals. Besides the endangered Grizzled giant squirrel, this reserve is home to reportedly, 14 tigers, elephants, leopards, Indian gaur and Nilgiri tahr. Now, tigers in the neighbouring Periyar Tiger Reserve and the Anamalai Tiger Reserve are able to find significant habitats, breeding spots and home ranges in the undulating terrains of the Srivilliputhur and Megamalai hills, offering excellent genetic exchange grounds for the tigers. The verdure of the reserve largely comprises tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, dry deciduous forests, moist mixed deciduous forests and grassland. In addition to wildlife, the reserve completely protects the Vaigai river and its catchment areas. The revival of this river is crucial to the long-term sustenance of several districts in Tamil Nadu, who use the river water for drinking and irrigation. #CWS #NationalParkSeries #SrivilliputhurMegamalai #TigerReserve #WildlifeConservation #EndangeredSpecies #Biodiversity

Has Tourism Become Elitist? What happens when ecotourism is priced out of people’s hands? How does this impact the way in which we perceive wildlife? Our CEO, Dr. Krithi K. Karanth 's research in 10 of India's premier national parks has revealed significant findings, including the steep rise in tourism costs. Once affordable, visits to these parks have become increasingly expensive, making it harder for people to experience these natural sanctuaries. Find answers to these questions and learn more about wildlife tourism in our full webinar. Living alongside majestic wildlife sounds idyllic, but for one Indian village nestled within tiger territory, it's a complex reality. Families face crop raids and livestock losses, testing the limits of coexistence. Yet, their deep connection to the land keeps them rooted. Finding a balance between human needs and wildlife conservation is crucial. How can we create a future where both thrive?
