Hyderabad-based space-tech startup TakeMe2Space is set to launch India’s first artificial intelligence (AI) lab in space aboard ISRO’s PSLV-C60 mission in mid-December. Named the Orbital Infrastructure - Technology Demonstrator (MOI-TD), this groundbreaking initiative aims to showcase real-time data processing in orbit, making space research more cost-effective and accessible. MOI-TD addresses a critical challenge in satellite operations, where up to 40% of data captured is unusable due to factors like cloud cover, necessitating costly transmissions to Earth for processing. The mission focuses on Earth observation applications, laying the foundation for future space-based computing capabilities akin to cloud services. The project was accelerated by the IN-SPACe Technical Center, a government agency supporting private space ventures. The MOI-TD platform integrates advanced components, including AI accelerators, flexible solar cells, reaction wheels, and an onboard computer, paving the way for next-gen satellite technology. India’s prestigious Gaganyaan mission is set to reach a major milestone with an unmanned test flight scheduled for March 2025. This mission will validate critical systems, paving the way for India’s first human spaceflight planned for 2026. ISRO has arranged an extensive tracking operation, deploying ships with advanced systems to the Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans. Each ship will carry eight ISRO scientists who will monitor the mission during a two-week voyage to their respective locations. The manned mission will see four astronauts orbiting Earth at an altitude of 400 km for three days before safely returning to Indian waters. Astronaut training is already in progress.
